I have a mare that was just diagnosed with cushings and insulin resistance after she has been having recurring bouts of founder. We are changing her feed program. What do you feed your special needs horses? I am looking for low starch, low calorie ideas. Right now she is on molasses free soaked beet pulp and a good quality vitamin mineral that has added protein and pre/ probiotics. Problem is she is not a fan of plain soaked beet pulp. Thanks!

My 33 year old Cushings horse has had it since he was 10 however he really didn't start showing signs till about 5 years ago. He is fed twice daily 1/2 pounds Renew Gold, 1/2 pound Manna Pro Max E Glo, Cool Calories and Forefront Colostrum. He also at night receives 4 pounds of soaked Hay Stretcher. This combination has worked wonders on him for the past 5 months as he was going down hill fast.

Just enough whole oats to get his herbs and 1/3 cup of whole flax once per day. Good quality grass hay and 24/7 turnout in the biggest pasture I can with an active pasture mate so it keeps him moving and burning calories. The pasture he is on doesn't have much to it but just enough to keep him moving around all day and his active pasture mate REALLY helps. This has worked great for my IR gelding. I tried the low starch/low fat feeds specially made for these types of horses and also put him in a dry lot with a slow feed net and limited amount of grass hay. He only worsened and seemed depressed. The new way I've done it he has lost weight and he is happy and active. That is what matters.

My gelding is dry-lotted and gets grass hay with a low-starch balancer. He is on Prascend. He hasn't had any episodes for approx 6 years and moves sound *knock on wood*

What kind of herbs have you been using? Horsepower herbs has been mixing me up a formula, I've been able to turn mine out on grass during the day and haven't had any problems, mine has equine metabolic syndrome, it was also suggested i ride this horse hard and keep his weight down its made a big difference.
