Opinions? I am just back after a broken ankle with a lot of screws and a plate. I ordered a pair of these. I got the barrel racing ones. Does not having tread in them affect them? Good or bad? What else can you tell me about them? This is my first pair so just looking for any info really.

I absolutely LOVE mine. My mother on the other hand who has broke both of her ankles and one of the twice hates them. My grandma has broken one of hers loves them. I have a pair with the rawhide and 3 pairs that are just metal. If you are use to having the grip you probably won't like them. I don't like grip on any of my stirrups so I don't know how someone would transition without them. I love how wide they are and I can't ride in anything else now. I also ride on the balls of my feet a lot or toes down when I run. I don't have trouble losing them but that could just be me.

I have a friend that broke her ankle because of those stirrups! There wasn't any give in them & she really broke it bad when her horse went down on her. The doc was also a rider & told her if she'd been using a good wooden stirrup (like Nettles), it would have "given" & not done near as much damage.

I have bad knees and can't live without these stirrups. I was worried about the lack of tread at first too, but I didn't notice any difference once I was in the saddle.

The original CROOKED Stirrups of Hico, TX are my favorite. They are very light and not bulky. Plus they have a petite barrel racer stirrup that is shorter height wise. I like a close contact stirrup. SROOKED has it figured out.
My favorite particular model are the Delux Barrel Rare. A little more expensive than the Economy but they are my favorite.

I cannot ride without these and don't have any true joint problems. I got used to no tread and if you think about it- tread along with rubber on your boots (assuming they are not leather soled) can be dangerous and lead to getting hung up. If you want something on them consider maybe wrapping in leather for slight grip.
