| My dog has recently started itching. It's not fleas or ticks. It's a skin issue. Do you have any suggestions? I've used a soothing shampoo but it's not helping. She's rubbing herself raw. |

Location: The best kept secret in TX | Get her in an Oatmeal bath, soak completely for 30minutes, towel dry, don't rinse. And then let her air dry. An oatmeal bath every other day until the itching stops. Then go to twice a week. Then once a week.
ETA You can find oatmeal bath packets back in the health and beauty aids at walmart. It will say Exzema soothing oatmeal bath. It's by Equate and comes in ready to use packets.

| It could be a food allergy. Alot of dogs will scratch, lick their feet and legs, or in more serious cases lose hair. Ear infections are also a sign. If you aren't already, I would try something WITHOUT grain and try to stay away from any proteins with wings (chicken, duck, turkey, etc). And read the ingredients very carefully because alot of foods use chicken fat as a preservative that will still cause them to react. Taste of the Wild is awesome and easier to find than some other foods, as well as being decently priced.
I managed a corporate pet store for food sensitive pets for about 5 years. I have a ton of suggestions if you want to PM me feel free :)

| Go to the vet and get her allergy tested or just the shot, its cheaper to do the shot and see if it helps than to test and go through all that and then buy the shot.
We bathe our bulldog in an anti-fungal shampoo from the vet, stops the itch too.
Oh, and Benadryl. Couple of pills(25mg) a day will help her out.

Location: North Dakota | If it's the first time it's been happening it can be seasonal allergies. Allergies with dogs have been terrible this year. I am a dog groomer and it seems like all I hear is allergy issues with dogs this year. I would give benedryl or zrytec for 10-14 days and see how your dog improves... I have my one french bulldog who has had terrible allergies all his life on some herbs to help his allergies. It works better than the benedryl ever did but if it was just a short term thing I would try the benedryl first. |

| I've taken her to the vet. Put her on mess 2x a day. It's helping but so expensive. She eats science diet dog food. The shampoo I've used is oatmeal based but I just got it and have only used it once. Maybe after a few more times it'll start soothing. Thank you for the ideas. |

Get her off the science diet and switch to grain free. She's prob allergic to the corn in the food. |

Location: North Dakota | Grain free is all there is too it. Many foods are claiming to be grain free but still have terrible ingredients. I have found fromm to be a good food for my two French Bulldogs or also grandma lucys freeze dried food is also a good one I've had good luck with. |

| I can get taste of the Wild at tractor supply. I'll try this. Maybe the science diet isn't working for her. I haven't been feeding it that long so maybe that's the cause.

Location: Pacific Northwest | My lab had terrible skin problems. I switched her to Taste of the Wild (Pacific Stream flavor), and then she had a prescription shampoo & leave-on lotion from the vet. When she would start to itch I would bathe her and apply the lotion, and give her a Benadryl. As long as I stayed on top of it she wouldn't scratch herself raw. If I let it slide even a little she would chew bloody holes in her legs and scratch holes behind her ears.
I work at TSC. If TOTW seems too expensive, the store brand 4Health are all no corn, no wheat, no soy. And the ones in the darker bags are completely grain free. I've never personally fed 4Health but it's by far our top selling dog food. |

| If it's a food allergy it will take some time to notice a difference. I would give it about a month and if your dog is still itching I would say it's something else. If you feed treats and the allergy is bad you should switch to grain free treats too. |

Location: Got Lobsta? | One of my dogs has had it so bad he lost much of his hair. We tried everthing, grain free, sensitive dog food, sterioids, finally a new product was released this spring it is called Apoquel. One bottle cost me $160.00. Its expensive but worth it, it works wonders. I have to feed 1/2 pill twice daily. Friends I know feed 1/2 pill ever other day with no problems. Dosage is based on severity of symptoms. He is a much happier dog and his hair is growing back. |

Location: TEXAS | I agree with those that said to grain free food and you can give dog Benadryl 2xs a day (Google for dosage per weight). If you see good results you can take Benadryl to 1x a day and maybe even stop the Benadryl. If it flares up start Benadryl again. Signs of allergies redness between toes, hair loss around eyes etc. And you may want to worm the dog. (Retired small animal vet tech) |

| There is absolutely no science behind grain free
Science and research says your dog is most likely allergic to a protien not a grain. Grains are getting a bad rep because of false marking. Ask your vet this is what they will say
A quick lesson for you.
There are two types of allergy; atopy (environmental) or a afr (adverse food reaction) if you dog is allergic to food they are reacting to the protien. Causing the itching. essentially it attachs to more than 1 receptor on the cell and in turn releasing histamine.
Main goal of a true allergy diet (only avaible through your vet) will be to make the protien so the body doesn't recognize it. Either through a novel ( new) or hydrolized (making it smaller so the body doesn't recognize it. Hope that makes sense.
Hydrolized is less $ fo feed than true novel diet. You must get this from your vet (retail foods DO NOT have quality standards in making their food to make sure it is not contaminated)
The only way to truly diagnose a arf is to do a food trail. Your vet can help you with this.
I hope this helps. |

I switch the flavors up every time since it's essentially the same feed :) |

| Example: They say grain free (which they are) but then they say it's "Pork" or "Turkey" but when you actually read the ingredients it has chicken or other proteins other than mentioned on the bag. Not all of them are like that but as long as you read the ingredients list.
They also like to add peas or pea powder in the food (alot of dog foods do this especially the cheaper, non grain free foods). It's fine that it's in the food but they do it to increase the %protein in the food (and add fiber). So if you see peas, pea protein, pea powder it could be the reason for the high level of protein rather than the actual meat content. |

Location: Usually on my horse | It is not the grain in the dog food. Chicken is one of the worst food allergens for dogs. If you are feeding a chicken based food get your dog on something else. Lamb, beef, anything but chicken. |

| We have our known allergy dog on Taste of the Wild, get rid of the dog foods with grains and fillers. We've had to go through a few different kinds though, she's okay with beef and salmon but chicken and pork bother her. It was a bit of trial and error and we almost allergy tested her but she's better now. She's also on a half tab of Apoquel once a day. |

| Not sure y that reposted lol. Yes it has!! Decided to go with 4Health dog food from tractor supply. Just in 2 days time the itching is must less. She still itches a little but not enough to have to take 2 Apoquel pills like before. In fact she hasn't had 1 pill today. I bought the white salmon flavor and it seems to be the answer. Thank you for all the input. |
