I am buying a 3-year-old quarter horse that us qualified for futurity What does this mean? What will I need to do with my new gelding?

It just means she has yet to be ran for money yet. In order for a colt to be eligible as a futurity horse they can't be entered in a barrel race prior to dec 1st of their 4 or 5 year old year. So if you wanted to enter it into a futurity next year you can't run for money for another month.

Eligible is a better word...

Like the above poster said, it means the horse is "eligible" for entering in futurities, not necessarily "qualified", as the only requirement in order for a horse to enter futurities is that they have never ran for money prior to their futurity year (some places its 4 years old, other places its 5 year old).

So all you would have to do is not enter him until he's old enough to do a futurity. Depending on where you're from, there's typically big races where the futurity is the "feature" race. Otherwise, not sure about other places, but most of the races around here have a futurity sidepot. You run in the open but roll your time into the futurity class.

You open barrel racers should contest this and get it changed .... if a horse does not run in the event the owner should not be allowed to buy their way into it ...

Rolling times over is not anything new.  Sometimes it is a sidepot, sometimes it is another opportunity to run your horse if you choose.  More money for producers,  less runs you have ave to put on your horse if you choose to roll over.

I always roll my time when I can. Saves runs on my old guy!

From a producer standpoint, we run the futurity and derby classes at our summer series as a sidepot. We don't have a lot of entries in the futurity and derby - less than 5 - so it makes way more sense than taking the time to work the ground yet again for those few runs.
