| I have a nice 10 year old gelding clocks 1D/2D. I have been running him in a cervi diamond gag short shank lifter with a three peice twisted wire w/dogbone center. He is very broke in his face bit when we make a run he doesn't come back to my hand in his turns. Feels like he pushe's through it and running around his barrels instead of getting his rear in the ground. Looking for Bit recommendations! Any feedback would be greatly appreciated! |

Location: Hill Country of TEXAS!! | Try a square mouth. I think Sherry has one in her bit line. I personally use Dave Elliot square mouths. It gives you that little extra help YOU need. I have many different bits with square mouths. |

| When my gelding is pushing through a bit that he's been working great in, something is sore and I know he needs vetted. |

What you describe is the horse has been trained to keep his speed with his
feet moving and up under himself ...
What you are trying to do is a no - no ... trying to get him to do a roll
back which is how most barrels get knocked down.....
never train a barrel horse to do a roll back !!
My advice is to stop nagging your experienced horse and let him work!! |

back which is how most barrels get knocked down.....
never train a barrel horse to do a roll back !!

Surprisingly...I agree with this.
If he's working in the 1D/2D in good company...let him work. Don't fix what ain't broke.
Rollbacks require a halt to forward motion, which wastes time. Keep them feet moving forward and turn in 4 wheel drive. As long as he's not dropping his front end and dragging himself around the turns, let him be. |

Go back to the bit you were using ...

| I would try switching to a lifter style bit with the same mouthpiece and see if that makes a difference. I ran my gelding in a chain Rosie gag for years. He getting bracy and dumping on his front end going into second and third something terrible. I switched to a chain mouth short shank lifter from Carolina Bit and it made a world of difference! Obviously make sure there's not a soreness issue. I wasn't very well educated in looking for soreness when those issues started, and finally (before switching bits) discovered he was sore in his hocks. Injected, rehabbed, and made sure he was sound - but by then it had become a habit for him. Lots of correct slow work, but switching up the bit is what finally made the difference. |

I run a super broke horse in the same bit you are describing at the top ... Cervi 3 piece dog bone with the small wire twist.
A couple thoughts come to mind .... when you "check" is it with both hands or one? Is it one solid check or several small "bumps" to get his nose and attention and shape the body?
I have had good luck really pushing/sitting with my outside hip, bumping with my inside hand several times until I am into the pocket, and then letting my horse work the backside on her own. With this particular bit, if I can get the body shape correct before we hit the pocket (hip in -shoulder up - ribs lifted - nose tilted just slightly inside) my horse will finish that turn with just my outside leg to support a bit.

Location: Stephenville, TX | I tried the Cervi gag bit on my well broke finished horse, and found he did the same you described as not really rating squared up like he usually does with his hip under him. I switched to a Myler Neil Merill with a Billy Allen type mouth with little to no gag and felt like he was more in my hands so to speak. He ran straighter into the pocket and I could tell he used his pivot foot better and was a little snappier. |
