So I can't be the only one when I talk about what I do for my horses that I get told I'm crazy- even from other horse people!

For example- I get up at 4am so my horses' breakfast can soak in hot water for an hour before I feed them every morning.. The looksI get when I tell people that are quite hilarious

PS- As I've been told by quite a few people.. If I treated a human half as well as I treat my horses I probably wouldn't be single

My horses get pretty much 3/4 of a scoop of feed .. But i have to measure each lb out in a cup to make sure it's 3 lbs , how dare you just estimate

I'm OCD about my horses grooming, how dare anyone see them if they have a spot of dirt on them? They have to look flawless before I leave home, or even ride in my own arena.

I feed just regular horse feed and coastal hay.

Most people can't believe the amount of money that I spend on my horses, but having World Champion horses is very satisfying. I get asked all the time how I can afford to do what I do.

I talk to Toni Tremble, the "horse psychic" and have for years. She is AMAZING! When I know something is off and can't figure out what's going on and the vets get stumped too- I call Toni. She has literally saved everything from lives to eyeballs in my barn.

I mix my own herbs daily to put in feed and people think I'm crazy bc it's "inconvenient" It takes me 10 minutes a day but costs a fraction of premix and instead of working more hours to afford the premix I mix and use instead get to spend more time with ponies. I also kiss my 5 yr old gelding on the nose everyday, he loves it!

Well, my family thinks I'm crazy for this...

My 2yo colt was pastured with a bay gelding for about a year before I sold the bay. 2yo got ulcers when he left. We have other horses, but he liked THAT one. I ended up having to buy my 2yo colt his own pony to get him out of his funk. The little turd annoys the daylights out my colt, but he loves him.

I make my horse love me.... No really, I force her to let me hold her head and kiss her nose and tell her she's my baby girl and I know in all reality I shouldn't coddle her and that she could care less about me unless I'm feeding her or scratching her butt.

I also always have to mix my supplements up in my feed, I can't just throw them in without spreading them out along with the oil.

I clean water buckets every night too... Everyyyyy night. They drink from the pond and ditches but their waters better dang well be sparkling clean.

I may have you beat! My futurity colt is a smidge neurotic. (He's a DTF out of a daughter of Tres Seis so it's not totally his fault!) I bought him a pony, he cares nothing for her! Instead he picked the High Brow Cat filly that WAS for sale. She's no longer for sale and will live out her days baby sitting her boyfriend. She goes where he goes or he will stress himself to the point of colic... UGH. The things we do for a horse!

I really don't trust too much either, and have about decided we should forgo vacations until I find a way to just haul all 5 with us wherever we go. . . . Except I'm dying to go to the NCHA Futurity starting tomorrow thru the 10th----wonder how much 5 stalls would cost for 4 or 5 days at Ft Worth?!!!

I let others feed for me (because I board with a friend), but I give instructions on how much to feed and when.  However, I won't ever buy hay without seeing it anymore. I'm very particular and a lot of people aren't careful enough with their storage of hay for me. They either let it sit out and get rained on, or they don't bale it correctly, or they let mice get into it. Bad hay is a pet peeve of mine.

I can't stand to let my husband drive when we have horses in the trailer, and he was a professional truck driver.

I also never let another person put on my boots or polo wraps.

Oh where to begin...
I don't let anyone but maybe 2 friends haul my horses, am very OCD about it, so imagine my horror last week when I had truck trouble and had to have both truck and trailer towed home!! I apologized at least a dozen times to my boy. And yes, it was a point of irritation between my husband and me. So when I finally promised he could haul in case of an emergency he felt better. Mind you, that be me in a coma or worse......
Then I don't let anyone tack up, the only thing I let my hubby do is put the bell boots on (and yes, I check those while putting on the splint boots). If anything goes wrong I only have myself to blame.
Also, I don't like anyone else feeding. I have a colorcoded feedschedule in the shed for the rare occasion my husband feeds. And the one week out of the year I have to board them (NFR) I will pre-make their grain and dry supplements in ziplocs that are marked per horse, per day, per feeding.... The wet supplements for my boy are written down in a way a todler can understand it. And I still stress about them...

Yup, I am very OCD! But they are my babies....

I have plenty, but yeah, I don't want anyone else hauling my horses.  I have done it in the past but it really makes my anxiety go crazy.

Also my constant need to put boots on them...for hauling, for riding, for round pen work.  I also am guilty of sheets/blankets and fly masks dependent upon weather.

My Mom would take the cake on this category though.  They have to have hay for "lunch".  She constantly obsesses as to whether they are too hot or too cold.  She hates them being turned out in rain.  Stalls are done 2 or 3x's a day.  She used to even weigh her flakes of hay.  The list goes on and on with her lol!

I just don't like anyone to touch my horse at a race (or in general), which is fine because she is horrible so no one ever really wants to (lol). She has the nickname "hell b****" for a reason.

I also don't let anyone go through the gates unless I am home. They are literally padlocked shut. You can go over the fence, but not through it. I have anxiety about someone leaving the gate open and something happening to her. I have a hide a key that only my retired neighbors know about (in the event of an extreme emergency).

Well I'm not as bad as some I guess. That's a relief. My husband can do everything I can do except saddle and boot up my horse. I dont mind him setting it up there but don't tighten my cinch lol and I have a list for him to feed by. And the feed buckets belong to each horse and you better have them stacked right for the next feeding. Lol but he never complains until I tell him how to drive. Hes pretty great!

I have the same issue haha, my good open mare is a witch, she will longe at another horse that gets to close to us (I do correct her for this) she has very very few friends LOL

My friends all hate her but I love her grit. They call her the dragon.

Growing up we were expected to feed horses, go get ready for school, saddle and load horses in the trailer and then catch the bus to school. Years of doing this, combined with my OCD, has left me with the inability to accept that anyone else can do it right! I will go as far as allowing someone to do it so I don't hurt their feelings and then taking the horse behind the barn and readjusting everything. I'm crazy

My husband is an avid hunter and always takes a few pack horses with him. It haunts me all season thinking about how messed up and uneven they could be.....

I guess I'm lucky... my SO rides colts and pens cows for a living AND grew up rodeoing- so I trust him with everything but polo wraps. He's had my good horse all day penning cows on him to keep him in shape while I'm on bed rest. It makes life a WHOLE lot easier

My stalls have to be clean. May be weird, but it's relaxing to me, to just unwind and clean stalls. I really love a horse that uses only one spot in a stall.
Also, nothing else can be in the pasture with my horses. No tractor, no vehicles, and especially no implements. My husband just shakes his head, because he sees other people do it with cows and horses with no problems. But, whenever a trailer or anything else is parked out there, I have constant anxiety that one of them is going to hurt themselves somehow.

(The people who feed for us aren't horse people so it has to be V E R Y S I M P L E for them ) And I'll never ever let my parents know how much I spend on my horses!! I'm afraid it would give my momma a heart attack. . . .
Mine get fed twice a day 365 days a year. I get up at 5:30 every morning and feed when I get home. I don't trust anyone to feed mine. Needless to say, I don't go out of town.

The stalls aren't too bad.  It's how much the parking is that will hurt your pocket book.

Chandler's Mom - 2016-11-12 9:19 PM Most folks think I'm crazy for simply keeping Dan alive----I mean after all what good could he possibly be, he only costs money, I don't ride him anymore, he requires special feed and supplements and some meds, has to be fed twice a day and stalled during that time to give him time to eat since he has very few teeth, etc, etc. He's 37 so put him down, Debra, stop being stupid. I get , let's say, MILDLY, irritated!!! He's still happy and healthy and hangs with the other 4 kids in the pasture. As I've said on other threads, he owes me nothing and he's gonna be the one to tell me when it's time to let him go. And I watch him closely for signs. We stayed on grounds two years ago for three nights and it wasn't cheap. Not as bad as a motel tho and we were close enough to just walk in the back at showtime. Still haven't decided for sure to go or not----cause of those 5 kids down there that I'm "crazy" about

I don't let anyone saddle my horses for me, the amount of anxiety it creates isn't worth it! I also don't let anyone haul my horses, not even my husband....

THIS! Nobody hauls my horses but me and it does create some friction but oh well lol

You are a smart person, I typically wont let anyone saddle my horse. My husband wanted to give me a break from the kids, so he went out and saddled up his gelding. I checked the cinch and went on a short trail ride or should I say hell ride. haha. The horse decided to buck twice, got home and realized he had a back cinch on. I asked SO if that horse ever had a back cinch on, and his response was IDK. My husband didn't think it was a big deal since I had a back cinch on MY saddle. Ill never let him saddle up a horse for me again. He had great intensions but GOD that ride hurt.

I feed them well and say nice things to them when they have a nice run.   I know it sounds crazy but it really does work for me

Nobody can boot/wrap my horses. I have a hard enough time letting someone on a rare occasion haul them and when I do I can imminently feel the ulcers forming in my own stomach lol.

I second Toni Timble. That woman is eerie accurate on everything I've ever come across. Speaking of I need to schedule a session with her asap.

Here is my biggest issue. I hate selling horses, and it's what I do for a living (breed, train, show, then sell) I can count on one hand how many horses I've sold that I'm actually happy with their new owners. Others I have felt were a good fit etc and after a few months of seeing their posts on Facebook or seeing them in person I actually begin to really dislike the new owners. Either to heavy handed or they spoil the **** outta the horse and ruin it lol etc.

Interesting to me that you say a new owner spoiled then to the point of ruining it? Can I ask what you mean by that?

Maybe I didn't word it correctly as I wasn't trying to link spoil one and ruining one as one but two different issues.

I sold a nice one and the new owner kept her in a 12x12 stall 24/7 and poured feed to it. coincidently the horse got extremely hot and to much for her to handle so she stopped riding it all together, horse now is a weaver stuck in a stall.

I sold a yearling that had all her ground work done, tied, she clipped, was an angel for the farrier. We had done all the major desensitizing like plastic bags, tarps, etc etc and the new owner just thought she was so cute she fed her treats and treats and more treats and she couldn't figure out why the filly was always nipping at her.

Another one we sold and the gal was so heavy handed the horse eventually started getting sour, she would run a nice pattern and then slam on the horses face to stop her before the gate even if it was a run in/run out set up.

None of these horses were cheap so early in my career I learned that money doesn't always equal brains lol, but I've also learned this is the nature of the beast we call the horse world. We're not always going to agree and that's okay. Once a horse leaves my place I don't get any say in their care or handling. I do my best to try to match horse and rider and let the chips fall where they may.

My tack/feed room is full of measuring cups, measuring spoons, weights, etc. Cupboards are full of first aid, any and all kinds of medicine, specialty feeds, supplements…and clean and organized.

House..no measuring spoons/cups (guess and dump cooking method) the “First Aid Kit” includes an empty bandaids box, some old allergy meds I got for a dog, and a lone cough drop. Cold meds/pain killer would be the bottle of Peppermint Schnapps kept in the freezer.

I also get up at 4:30 to feed and clean pens so it is done right (my way).
