I'm in need of another saddle as I have horse with wide shoulders. Opinions on the Coats Lazy L saddle as far as quality? Ride? Fit? And do they fit wider shouldered horses? Thanks!

Also: any opinions on a Shiloh Jerri Mann for wide shoulders? Also smae questions: quality, ride, fit, etc.? Thanks again!

try the Sharin Hall saddles! They offer both regular tree (6 3/4) or wide (7"). I have 3 of them now and love them! Fits all styles and body types really well! Let me know if you need more info on them.

I think they are awesome quality. I've been trying to find a Coats for months. I've tried both the original and the Lazy L and I would be satisfied to own either. The Lazy L gets a bad name for some reason, but just because Larry himself doesn't build it, doesn't mean its not a quality saddle.

My daughter has a Lazy L and the quality seems to be at least equal to any manufactured, high-end saddle.  Her mare has good withers, but broad shoulders and a broad back.  The Lazy L fit the mare better than any Double J or Martin model- we tried about 15 saddles on her.  I will say that we found a used Marty Byrd that fits even better than the Lazy L, but at the time we needed one, the Lazy L was the best.  They seem to hold their value well, which IMO is a reflection of good quality.

I also tried it on my big, racy built gelding and it fit him surprisingly well considering how different he is from the mare.

Thank you very much! I kind of thought so, but figured it couldn't hurt to ask. As many saddle brands as is out there, I don't remember all the particulars of every single brand well.

I have had a Lazy L for many many years.  It held up great, and mine does fit a wide horse.  I really like this saddle and would get another one.

Instead of creating a new thread I added more to this one above. Everything I knew about saddle fit went out the window with this horse, LOL. Her issue is where her shoulders tie into her withers is really wide. One saddle I have fits her ok, and the other one not at all. Frustrating.

I have a Shiloh Jerri Mann.  I adore this saddle, it rides awesome--very balanced--and fits a lot of horses well. That said, on my gelding with big shoulders, it's still a little tight on his shoulders. It fits the rest of him well, and I can get by using a csi or correcTor, but it doesn't have enough flare to call it a good fit on him.

Thank you! I'm hoping this horse will grow into her shoulders and maybe become a bit more even, and hopefully easier to fit. She's a coming 3 year old, and I've not gone through such an interesting saddle fit experience with a horse before.  I don't want to spend a load on an expensive saddle for a 3 year old, but I need something to ride her in.

I ride a Lazy L and a Shilo Jordan Briggs Contender. They are both great saddles. I looked for a used Coats with a particular tree  for a long time before finding and buying the Lazy L at the Coats booth at the NFR a few years ago. I was told when I bought my used one it is the same qualilty of leather and same trees as a custom coats but is not made by Larry. I would still love a custom coats but at the time I didn't have time to wait for one to be built and this one had the tree I wanted. I won the Shilo and really like it, I have had Shilos before and I think they are good quailty espically for the price they are.

I have ridden both. Both are good quality saddles. The Lazy L is similar to their custom saddles but not the same. I believe Coats fits horses with a straighter top line, quarter horse type build. The Shiloh will fit a horse with more prominent withers and some "dip" in their back, not sway backed but some curve.

The Jerri Mann tree fits a lot straighter than the Contender/Finalist tree and doesn't have the shoulder flare either.
