Location: NE TX | My mare runs in Mach 90 and then some like she's at the NFR going for the gold buckle and after the first barrel she loses some speed, then a little more after second, then I hit her coming home and she speeds up some but not as much as when she was coming in.
Any ideas what it could be? It's the same thing she did this spring before I found out she was a bleeder. She isn't bleeding now so not sure what's going on now.

Location: In the Hills of Texas | Sounds like a typical bleeder. Just because you don't see blood doesn't mean she isn't bleeding. Have you had her scoped right after running her when she does this?

Sounds like a typical bleeder. Just because you don't see blood doesn't mean she isn't bleeding. Have you had her scoped right after running her when she does this?

Location: NE TX | She's not doing any of the other things she did when she was bleeding this spring. She would cough and shake her head and really want to put her head down.
Prior to a run she gets 5cc IV 2 hours out. At home I walk for 5 minutes, trot for 15, do whatever barrel work she requires (usually at a trot), and walk 5 minutes. I never get out of a trot at home cause she is severely hot headed and the faster you go the more anxious/tense/nervous she gets and the more it turns into a fight and possible bleeding episode. |

| It's just really not enough. I would figure out how to incorporate plenty of loping, even if you had to longe her or pony her, it would be better than nothing.
What you're describing is the same as us going for a walk for 5 minutes everyday, then being required to give our life, carrying at least 20 lbs, with tight turns, for hundreds of feet. Gonna be winded, gonna be weak.
Make sure that you get her flappers checked by someone who really knows what they're doing, and make sure she's not fighting a paralyzed flapper that can cut off air supply. |

Yep. Even if she ISN'T bleeding, it sounds like she just doesn't have the wind built up for the run with your current routine.

Others suggested she's out of shape. Even if she is out of shape, wouldn't she/shouldn't she have more gas than just to the first barrel? |

Mine didn't make noise and had a paralyzed left flapper. The reason why I feel she's not conditioned enough is because I feel she's probably still bleeding, and the bleeding can definitely be caused by lack of conditioning. If there's no blood in the esophagus, it doesn't mean she's not bleeding. Only a BAL can truly tell you the whole story.

The BAL test is AMAZING at the things it will tell you about your bleeder!!! Highly recommended!!! |

Depends on how "in or out" of shape they are. If I hopped up right now and ran a mile I would struggle at the end. I could do it but no where near as steady throughtout the entire mile like when I jogged one every other day. So if they are in shape to trot a mile and you ask for them to run it I would bet the ending wouldn't be as grand as it would be if they trotted a mile and ran a mile here and there in training. Clear as mud? |

Location: NE TX | Thank y'all. I am going to increase our weekly exercise schedule and will also be taking her for a rescope next week to also make sure she isn't bleeding still. Like I think I've said in previous posts. She is super honest and tries 110% every time so I just want her to feel good and the way she's running now I don't feel like she's feeling good. |
