| Having a constant battle with tight muscles with performance horse. We have X-rayed hooves for correct angles, hocks, stifles, full spine, pretty much just going down the list to find the reason for extreme lumbar/hamstring tightness. Its to the point if you brush against his hamstrings he will jump forward.
Selenium/Vit E and Magnesium have been added. Massages, stretching, microcurrent/infrared/BOT/magnamave/chiro everything is temporary. Tested blood levels and for pssm (negative).
Vet has given robaxin and ace to help relax the muscles for relief but nothing permanent of course. Most recent suggestion was neprofin. There isn't much info or testimonials floating around, was hoping someone on here has some input.

| I've had better results with Game Changer by OENutraceuticals. You might check for EPM. One of the signs of EPM is lumbar pain. A lot of cutters treat their horses once a year.

| Have you tested for all of the PSSM variants? How is this horse bred?
Are you using NATURAL vitamin E (d-alpha) or synthetic (dl-alpha)? What form of magnesium have you tried? What else are you feeding for hay, grain and supplements? Do any of your grains or supplements contain iron? |

| she tested negative for psssm1, she's on ultra fiber by adm and vit e is elevate concentrate. When I started her vit e count was .2 with the low end of the scale being 2. she was on 5,000 iu of the vit and that brought it up to 1.7 after 30 days. I've since doubled it so she's getting 10,000 units. I also tried ALCAR for 30 days and that did nothing. She is sore through her hamstrings and tight right behind her front legs where the girth goes. I have not tried magnesium or anything else than listed above. What are they treating once a year with?
I've heard many ppl say they treatment for EPM once a year as well.
I want to know what they are using.... |

| Pssm 2 won't show on the hair test. A high fat, low sugar diet won't hurt a horse for 3 months. I'd give it a go. |

Location: 31 lengths farms | I've used it with good results on my mare who has kidney issues so we can't use typical NSAIDs. Used it last year when she kicked over a panel and hung her leg. Works well for her, and my big mare who tends to be a little tight and stiff in general but havne't had the best of luck with it on the gelding. He is 16, has some navicular type changes and Previcox seems to suit him better for long weekends or multiple run type days.

Location: Oklahoma | I actually treat twice a year....spring and fall. Most the people I know are using Levamisole, as it is also an immune booster. I had a horse that was like you are describing....stayed VERY body sore, also tested everything like you, and finally my vet asked how long I was cooling him out after riding. I really didn't know....said I just walked him until he wasn't breathing hard....come to find out, I wasn't cooling him out long enough. My vet told me to try walking him for 20 minutes (told me to look at my watch and time myself),as lactic acid takes 20 minutes to leave the muscles. I started doing that (and believe me, 20 minutes is a long time) and Voila!! no more body soreness. You might try it....it's easy and doesn't cost anything. Now I walk all my horses 20 minutes after a run and I don't have body soreness issues any more.

Hair tests for PSSM2, PSSM3/MFM, PSSM4 + other variants ARE available through EquiSeq, not Animal Genetics or AQHA.
Since she is negative for type 1, the high fat/low NSC diet is not for her. The diet for PSSM2/PSSM3 is super high protein (amino acids), still cautious regarding levels of NSC, plus high natural vitamin E and magnesium. Also, take care to ensure that the rest of her minerals are in proper balance.
Being that Jet Deck (PSSM2) and Nasrullah (PSSM3/MFM) are both suspected carriers, I would test for those variants first.
The ladies in the facebook group "PSSM Forum" are very knowledgable and helpful. Even if your mare doesn't end up having PSSM, they may be able to help you or at least give you a different opinion. |
