Im In CA and every year I get a coggins and health cert for my horses when I go to AZ. And every year they just wave me through. Never even ask to see my paperwork. Its costs me about 200 total for my horses tests and paperwork. Entry fees are already crazy!!! It USED to be AZ was very strict about paperwork and actually checked horses/papers. When the economy went down they cut that... I wonder if I can get buy not having them this year??

The first time you don't have what you need will be the first time you get stopped!
Plus, if there were an emergency, you'd want that information. It might be a financial pain now, but it'll be better than being stopped, turned around, quarantined, whatever crazy stuff they do.

I think if you are traveling with horses, an annual coggins test is a good idea regardless of whether they actually get checked or not.
I know I won't go anywhere without paperwork and I won't haul horses for anyone (even close friends) across state lines without it either.

Agree with this.

We have a rodeo every year that requires a bunch of paperwork and they NEVER check it. It's very frustrating but I know the one time I don't...they will ask for them. Better to be safe than sorry.

It's better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

ETA: Getting caught without a coggins is BAD news. Typically it's a pretty hefty fine for not having a current negative coggins. Depending on the state and what their specific laws are, they can seize your trailer, your truck, your horses, and just about everything in between.

InTexas a health certificate is only good for 30 days, but my vet is cheap. since I live near the LA line I go back and forth all the time so it is necessary. Arkansas will not let you on the grounds without Coggins and some places require a health certificate too so I keep mine up to date.

I might add that the seller of any horse in Texas most provide a valid Coggins at the time of sale. I bought a horse recently and seller forgot to give me the Coggins. When I called about it seller conveniently did not know where it was.

If it's required, you better do it, better safe than sorry. I don't travel outside the state so I don't get health certificates, but always keep current coggins. I've had to show them at one barrel race ever.

I always have a coggins and health papers (always get one when I cross state lines esp Wisconsin). I have never been pulled over for a check but know many that have. Just good to always be prepared!

I have heard a rumor that if you don't have it they fine you and quarantine them. Not worth it to me no matter how ridiculous I think those tests are.

Ok. I will have them done. Your probably right. The first time you don't have them is when you need them. My vet does the test right there in her office to!!! CA vets do charge a lot. Coming back to CA they just ask where I have been and waive me on. Lol

HELLO CALIFORNIA ...
Look around for a small horse sale close to you ... to sell a horse it must
have a coggins and usually there is a mobile vet with portable test
equipment to give you instant coggins results and papers.

I know a couple of Tx vets that do this and charge $35 state amount for
coggins and $25 for shipping/ health papers ...

Find a sale and call them to check it out ..

Can you get by without one? Maybe.

Until you get pulled over, you don't have the paperwork, the law decides to make an example of you, your horses (and in some states your rig too) gets quarantined and/or confiscated so you have to hire an attorney, pay the ridiculous feed to get horses and maybe entire rig back....that $200 quickly becomes a pretty cheap investment in this case.

Coggins I never go without.  I don't get health papers unless the facility/show requires them.  They used to be good for 30 days, but now you have to have a destination on them.  So, they are only good for 1 trip.

I don't know if it was on-site, but last year I forgot to get a coggins done going to Buckeye, and they were able to get it done and back to me by the end of the weekend. And wouldn't you know it, I got stopped, again, coming back into CA. Thank goodness for that on-site vet!

It's actually been around for a very long time.
One of my equine vets also used to work a local monthly horse sale and brought his portable lab to the sale where blood could be drawn and coggins run onsite.  Only takes a half hour to run one.

He also works some very large breeding farms in the area and takes his lab with him.  Just recently there was a local outfit moving 1000+ head of BLM mustangs from one ranch to another, he had to drive up to that ranch and do all the coggins before they could be moved.

So yes, the technology does exist.  He only charges $30 for a coggins and $10 for a health certificate regardless of how many horses are written on the health.

When I sell a horse and need a coggins ASAP I haul it to his clinic and he'll run it right there while I wait.

We have the quick Coggins in Arkansas and the digital Coggins (if you are talking about the one with pics) is accepted. You just have to have a paper Coggins. No pics on the phone or photocopies are accepted.

Well it's the law to pull a coggins so, I would never NOT have on on a competition horse who leaves the house. Health certificates, if I'm traveling across state lines I will pull one, especially if the rules state they are checking them. Better safe than sorry.

Yeah California sales do NOT require Coggins. The only time I was ever stopped and they actually LOOKED at my paperwork was when I was hauling a horse back here that I picked up in CO. They had us pull to the side, go in the office thing and they looked it over. If you say they're California horses, they don't usually care to check the paperwork at all.

I have been stopped a few times coming back into California over the years. Usually on I-10. Also if there is some kind of virus going around, like when the vesticular stomitis (sp?) was going around. Granted we have shown them papers that didn't go with the horse, but they still asked for them and wrote down numbers. We've also been pulled off to the side and have to go in the office. Twice they made us drop all the windows to check markings.

yes, it's for real ! I live in Texas and get mine done at the horse sale. Vet comes to my trailer, pulls the blood and has results in 1 hr. It's the ELISA test, vs the AGID version which takes longer.

ALWAYS have the coggins, and I USUALLY ALWAYS have a Health Cert, just becasue.

This past summer though, I didn't hvae one for a couple of months. I went to a race in TN and they told everyone they would check and they did.

My MO vet is very strict about the health cert. becasue he has been in meetings and conferences when the state vets all talk about the hows and whys...He turned a ton of horses away from the MO State fair and they were from IL, IA, etc becasue they didn't have health certs. He said they were all over them becasue of rhino outbreaks.
