You could try giving them a salt lick or maybe a slow freeder for their hay, something to distrcit them- Usually though, if they pace or their messy, you just have to suck it up...

If this horse is new to stalling sometimes they just need to settle in. Slow feed net is a great option... also sometimes horses do better on the other side of the barn.. sounds odd I know but my mare has to be on a certain side of the barn or she is a pig.

Our mares are always neat and tidy in their stalls, and our geldings are always very messy. We gave them salt licks to see if they would keep them distracted, but it just makes them pee more and their stalls are even worse. So when we go down and pick stalls, one person does our one gelding and the other person can get all the mares cleaned in that same amount of time it takes to clean one gelding. LOL

I heard somewhere that if you pile their poop in one corner they will start going there. Could be a old wives tale but worth a shot

I try to pick my stalls more often if I have a messy one. I've also given them a hay bag in the corner or where their feeder is. While doing chores Ive tied them up by their Haybag. I have geldings and mares both that go in one spot and I've had others no matter the gender go everywhere and walk it all around. If they are worth cleaning up after I deal with it.....otherwise I seriously sell them

Maybe it's a coincidence, maybe not. But every horse I've had that was a pig in the stall was also very nervous by nature, a worrier, very ulcer prone. When I kept their tummies happy, their stalls were cleaner. They paced less and pooped less.

Also, are they stalled beside their buddy? I don't mean can they see another horse from their stall. Is their favorite horse, the one they pal around with in the pasture, the one that is also stalled closest to them? I've found that helps some.

If anyone ever figures this one out, let me know, lol!

Some are messy and some are not. Putting more feed in their pen makes them poop more. Putting salt will just make them pee more. We have a bunch of horses and get new ones in all of the time. Mares, geldings, laid back, more nervous.... there doesn't seem to be any common denominator, as far as I can tell?

The best thing we ever did for all the stall maintenance is feed only cubes. That cuts down on any hay on the floor and there is less poop to clean and spread. We also have mats with limestone underneath and use pelleted shavings on top.

Had 1 mare that only pooped along the walls in the stall and while in the pasture only pooped on the fence lines, wish she could have trained them all to do that..

UGHHHHH!  My LSOF doesn't spend too much time in a stall, mainly because he is a terrible PIG!  He's really laid back, but spends his spare time crushing every single apple into precisely the size of the shavings, and evenly distrubuted in the 12x12 space.  He eats his grain, then poops right in the grain bucket (maybe he just likes his bucket washed everyday).  It's not like he could possibly be THAT bored, usually he's just in overnight so I don't have to find him in 1000 acres in the morning when I want to leave.

My son's calf horse is a gelding with a similar personality, and he makes a tidy little pile of poop in the corner, and never has an apple out of place.  Literally takes 2 minutes to clean his stall- and most of that is finding the pee. I figure it's because he has 4 high white socks and doesn't like to be dirty.

I have a paint gelding that is the cleanest horse I have ever had.  He is totally content in his stall, doesn't make a mess and poops all in one spot.  I love it....now I have a weanling that poops random and mixes it all in.  He is turned out right now but they still come into the end of the barn for shelter and I clean it daily, and the weaners are pigs!!  I am not hopeful he will outgrow it.  But I love him so I just try to clean it 2x a day.  LOL.

I have tried this with my 4 year old because he tears up his stall. I have been putting it in the corner for 6 months now and it hasn't done anything for him. Still poops and then walks through it. I just think he is a messy horse.

I use a slow feeding hay net and it helps A LOT with my messy one, really keeps him busy all night! I really really like the Hay Chix heavy duty ones because my horse can be rough on them.  The mini nets will fit about half a bale of hay and the micro minis will fit a couple of flakes.  In my signature there is a link for a 20%off coupon code.  Good through december 31st

I have a very clean mare that always goes in the same spot. I noticed when she was in a pen with 2 other horses, they all started going in about the same spot and keeping it relatively clean. I took her out and the other 2 turned back into messy little pigs going wherever :(

Ok, blowing the theory----Sean's big paint (mostly white) is past the pig stage. . . . He's a HOG. Only in his stall long enough to eat (twice a day) and pees at least 2 to 3 times as well as poops. And usually the poop is in his feed tub. Sonny knew your theory and bucked it!!

This actually works. It's even better if you have a run/paddock off their stalls because you can then train them to go outside. Leave 1 pile where you want them to go. If you have a paddock off the stalls take all the bedding out of the stalls and put a bag of shavings outside in a corner where you want them to go. Put 1 scoop of their wet and 1 poop pile on the new spot and leave the stall bare. They will learn to both poop and pee outside. After they have been good for a couple weeks you can try rebedding their stalls. If they start going potty inside again, remove all bedding except your one spot outside again. It really works and your cleaning will take 5 minutes because you only have 1 spot outside to clean. Your just re-training habits. Some horses it also works to use a different horses poop on your chosen spot.

My gray didn't get the memo, he uses manure piles as pillows...

I also have one that just pees soooo much...I don't even know how it's possible.  He basically floods his stall every. single. night.  Maybe he just likes fresh shavings...

This is going to sound terrible but I had a gelding years ago who would destroy his stall. Just disgusting. I had to strip it almost every other day, he was that bad. So finally I went all 'tough mom' on him and didnt clean his stall for a couple days (they only stayed in at night), until I started seeing a 'poop brim' lol. I then, stripped his stall, bedded it down with his favorite shavings because he loved to lay down and the next morning his poop was all nice and tidy in the corners of his stall. Kid you not, that horse never had a messy stall ever again. He loved his clean shavings and laying down too much to make a messy stall again!

I know how you feel...my geldings are neat (the 10 year old is super neat). The mare...well...I think she is part piglet. She seems her happiest when she is covered in mud with her face in the round bale.

They spend most of their time turned out, unless the weather is gross. I spot pick what I can, but pretty much just strip the inner 6 feet of her stall. I think it is due to her being a water drinker...at least she is hydrated.
