Needing some wound advise for a friend... They had a yearling turned out in the pasture. Late at night this weekend they found her nearly in shock. Her front left chest/leg - where the two meet - had a huge hole (about the size of a small dinner plate) and you could a man sized fist inside the hole. There was a little bit of muscle hanging out. They rushed her to the vet on call. He cleaned it up and said they couldnt stitch muscle so it would have to remain open to heal. He gave her some scarlett oil to put on it as well - once some of the muscle dies they will cut it off. He said there is a 50/50 chance that it would heal properly to ride her one day. This is about all I know, but I would think there were other options out there. She is waiting for a call today from another vet for a second opinion.
Has anyone had any deep/large muscle tears and what did you do to treat it?

did you see when krystals horse got a post stuck in its chest?!?! She did NutraWound and underwoods. It healed up real nice. I would start trying to heal it from the outside in so you don't get any problems. So sorry to hear about your horse. That must have been so scary to come out and find.

Mine ripped it open on a cow squeeze chute. Another horse chased him and he jumped a gate and then ran around scared and must have caught it on this little piece that stuck out an inch. It has his hair on it anyways.
Are you on facebook? I have before and after pictures as it healed. It was horrible and there was a fist size hole where we could see his esophagus (sp?). His entire hide on his chest was pealed back, it had frozen because we were 40 below and the vet had to cut it off dye to loss of blood flow. He healed wonderfully, we had his lightly started as a 2yr old in the fall and he has no lasting effects and minimal scaring considering what it looked like.

That would be great... like I said it really is my friends yearling... I had enough bad luck with babies for a while so I sold all mine lol. I will definetly send you a message - I knew there had to be something more she could do besides scarlett oil.

Scarlet Oil isn't ideal at all to me, but I am not a vet. I have used it, just not on such an open wound. I had Gunner on a liquid antibiotic, it was some kind of SMZ. He was given Bute for just a couple of days. I started him on Nutrawound immediately and then Underwoods within the week. The Underwoods is what makes it look crusty and white. you spray the Underwoods on and then sprinkle baking powder to hold it on. I never washed it or scrubbed it etc. Just sprayed Underwoods and doused over it with the Baking powder. It oozed and I just let it do its thing. The hair grew back faster than I thought it would and he has no "hole" there anymore. When he is shed off you can see the line of the scar, but he has free range of motion. He has a beautiful english-y extended trot. Don't let your friend give up hope!!!
Granulex is amazing if you can find it anymore. I also love Underwoods and baking poweder! I also put Corona on the leg if the wound is draining on it to keep if from getting yucky. Good luck!
