Long story short a lady wants to lease my horse for her daughter the barrel race on. Which sounds awesome but how much do you charge? And do you ask them to pay insurance or something in case he's injured and can't race again god forbid? I'd really like to just sell him but she's been burnt before and more interested in a lease

Don't do it unless you have complete faith in them.   I have let our  trainer take 2 of our horses for her daughter and they had immaculate care and came back better than they left because they had the mom/trainer tuning on them.  I think this is the exception though.  I did not charge her because normally you pay 900/month for her services-it was a good deal for me too.   Definitely have a written contract, require insurance but understand that there are situations where insurance will not cover your loss.  I would require medical coverage as well as loss of use.  IDK what you would charge, it depends on the value of the horse, maybe figure it as you would a car payment plus all maintenance etc.???

I would never lease a horse. If you're wanting to sell the horse, why are you considering leasing him because an interested party has been burned in the past? I have a really hard time trusting people when it comes to situations like this and would be extremely reluctant to get involved. I'd much rather just have a clean sale and be done with it.

Would it be an on sight lease? Those tend to work out better. As far as what to charge, it really depends on off sight or on sight, horses training level. If you really just want to sell offer to have her do an onsight lease for short period of time and see if it's the right fit for her daughter. If it would be a long term lease I wold have them pay the insurance.

It would be off site. But the more I read the more I've decided leasing seems to dangerous. He's completely finished went to youth world last yr. he's fabulous but I can't risk him getting hurt. I've given myself a migraine stressing about this all day.

The lady suggested it and wants to meet him this week and said she's bringing her trailer. They live 3 hours away. I was shocked that she's so prepared to bring him home and I just was not expecting it

I guess it depends what kind of relationship you have with the person. I currently do a care lease on a horse BUT the owner is my mentor and friend, plus they only live two miles away and we ride together a lot so it's not like she doesn't know what is going on with him/how he is being taken care of.

If it was me leasing out a horse it would also have to be in my immediate vicinity and to someone I deeply trusted (not only to take good care of the horse but to step up and do the right thing if it were to be injured aka PAY the vet bills etc!)

Yeah I was just so anxious about it that I gave myself a migraine and spent the rest of the night taking meds to have it gone at about 11pm. I am going to shoot her a message today and tell her that I just cannot lease him out for the fear of him getting hurt, but they are more than welcome to come try him and buy him. I feel like a failure for selling him, like I'm letting him down. Can you guys come fix my anxiety too?

I have leased a few of my horses and it has never worked out well for me. They always come back broken in some way and I have to put them together. Never will I lease again. I even leased to a person who I was friends with thinking that would be better but it wasn't. If it isn't theirs they  just don't take care of them the same.  So when ever anyone asks I say no, for sale only. Everyone has been burned so I don't want to hear a sob story to try to convince me. Sorry for the rant just don't want the same thing to happen to anyone else. But if you do go through with the lease make sure they get insurance for the dollar amount you want, $10k medical, mortality and loss of use. My friend leased her horse out and the person said they had gotten insurance but didn't! The horse coliced went in for surgery then had to do a second surgery 24 hours later ended up getting stuck with the bill  and a pasture ornament, so make sure you see proof they have insurance.

I've had lots of on site leases work out great BUT that being said I'm able to watch the horse and can identify and fix any issues that may come up. I would personally would never do an offsite lease. There are so many risks involved.

If someone has been burned before that's unfortunate. I'd offer that they can come and try the horse a couple times and you'd be willing to provide any advice after the sale you can.

Good luck!

of course, so typical,  why would they respond? It didn't go their way.  It's funny how people will talk your ear off when they want something and then drop off the face of the earth if they don't/can't get it. Hopefully you can rest easy with no anxiety tonight.

Good, Glad that you got this part over with, I was worried that she would guilt you into doing this least thing, sounded like she had it all figured out. Just stand your ground and it will work out for you

I'm so glad you did this!!! Clearly they weren't in a position to buy and we're more interested in borrowing your horse.

I hope he finds a great home soon.
