| I switched my old man over to purina sr a few weeks ago, slowly.. I didn't just switch overnight I mixed it in with his old feed for a week. He's only getting a few lbs a day because he's a super easy (fat) keeper. But I've noticed he's really gassy and runny.. I recently treated for sand and he's utd on his worming schedule. Only thing I've changed is his feed. Could it just be the increase in fiber from the sr feed? I'm thinking of just putting him on the omnis cubes my 2 year gets. He really doesn't need grain he's not in work and pretty much a pasture pet at this point. |

Location: Opelousas, LA | If you have Omnis, I would switch him over and give it a try. My old man is 31 this year, has teeth but they are very brittle and he can't chew hay but he did great on Omnis when I had them. |

I was worried about his teeth with the cubes but I keep hearing horses with little to no teeth do just fine on the omnis. He's got all his teeth and doesn't seem to have any issues with eating hay or his grain so I think I'll give it a try. Thanks! |

Location: Wherever They Send Me | My 24 yo is on heaping scoop Purina Equine Senior (about #7 daily) and heaping scoop Omnis (about #6 daily), and I think he looks really good! He only has four teeth that touch (two on each side). He has no issues with the Omnis.
Every so often he will get the runny poops, I just watch his water intake and clean his booty. But it isn't anywhere near as bad as when I was giving him beet pulp and Purina Senior...I had to clean his booty daily. |

Location: Dubach, LA | Beet pulp is the second ingredient in Purina Sr. It choked mine, and I can certainly see the runs being a problem. |

| I gave him a small scoop of the omnis tonight to see how he'd like them. I don't like the way he was chewing them, he didn't eat all of them either.. he walked away. I own a big choker so I'm paranoid already. I don't feel like they are going to work for him. Not sure what else to give him. Don't want anything too expensive or high in fat, he's too fat already but I just need to give him a little something in his stall at night. If I could find good clean oats from a safe source I'd go that route but I haven't had luck in that department. I was thinking maybe just giving him strategy. |

Check into the Bluebonnet feeds if you have a store that carries Bluebonnet, I think Bluebonnet is about the best feed out there.  |

I do feed Bluebonnet to my good horse, but I didn't like feeding the old guy that high dollar high fat feed. My feed store is a new BB dealer ( mostly because of me pestering for so long lol!) They only carry 2 kinds right now so I hate to ask them to bring in another type for just 1 horse and he's only getting a few lbs a day. I was hoping the purina sr would work for him but he's so gassy on it. |

I gave Total Equine a try and it worked great for him, the extruded nuggets are easy to chew (yes, I ate a few to check) and the main ingredient is alfalfa so they do get some fiber. In a pinch, I got some senior feed from Muenster that is also extuded and he did fine on that too. The good thing about the TE is that it stays good for a while, if you have to travel to get it you can get a couple months worth and it stays good even in our humidity. |

Dan (38) is on Purina Sr Active and he's gassy as well as occasional cow patty looking poop. Not diarrhea, just loose. He's been on this for YEARS and does great, so I just keep a watch to make sure it doesn't turn runny. Then I'll worry. |

They sell total equine where I get the omnis. I've never looked into that feed before. How much does it run? |

If he is an easy keeper and really doesn't need it, then I would not feed it. What were you feeding him before, and why did you feel that he needed a change? |

Since hes a easy keeper and no health issues and your just feeding him a few lbs a day I would just feed him what your feeding your other horses..Why do you feel like he needs a Sr. feed, just asking  |

| I don't want to feed him the expensive performance feed my horse is getting, 2lbs a day adds up quickly. I don't feel like he needed a sr feed I just went that route because it was significantly cheaper than the BB I'm feeding. I feed my 2 yr old omnis but I don't want to give that to the old guy either he didn't care for it. |

Location: Florida.. | Ive never had issues with it .. love it... but some horses get that way with added fat or fiber yes.. give it some time to adjust if you can.. also id manure test for sand.. not just treat and see what it shows.. sr grain is great and easy to digest for any horse.. our vet hospital feeds it to every horse after colic surgery.. |
