We are planning a girls trip to NOLA and have some sight seeing things we want to do and visit. Are there any must see or dos while in NOLA? We are past the age of partying so evening stuff to do would be great!  We want to see and do some cool, memorable things :)

ETA- Its a girls trip :)

I know it's not for everyone, but if I was there I'd love to visit the Villalobos (pit bull) Rescue. (Spelling probably very off!!) I watch the tv show and think it would be really something to actually get to see it in person.

We like to go to some of the bars that serve great food and have jazz bands. The architecture of some of the city's historical sites is breath taking. There are so many things to see and do you can't even imagine!!

I know they have Cemetery tours, lots of famous people buried there. And I think I heard they have Plantation tours too.. I would love to be able to tour the really old homes there.

Thanks - never heard of it called NOLA before!

It's one of my favorite places - even though it has a shady rep.

Good food and lots of fun!

I want to take the cemetery tour the next time I go!

I found the voodoo stores intriguing.

Oak Alley Plantation (Brad Pitt filmed "Interview With the Vampire" also Beyonce filmed segments of one of her newer videos there. Destrihan (spelling?) Plantation also great if you enjoy history. When in the French Quarter you really feel like you are in another country. Cafe Du Mond is a popular place for Bignets and coffee. Tons of great hole in the wall restaurants. The aquarium is cool as well. You wont be impressed with Burbon Street.

Marie Laveaux is buried in St Louis Cemetery but I was warned not to go to the cemeteries downtown by the superintendent of another cemetery. The entire French Market is wonderful. The old Jackson brewery has been made into shops. Bourbon Street at night is safe because every cop in the city is there. Ride the street car. Aquarium,. Confederate museum. COMMANDERS PALACE restaurant. The Delmonicos were friends of my grandparents but I think that restaurant's name has changed. Maybe not, don't know. Emeril Lagassi bought it. Galatoir's for lunch. Brennan's restaurant is good but extremely expensive. I think money is better spent elsewhere. New Orleans has some of the best food in the world and I would spend most of my time eating. My O My club is interesting--female impersonators. Pat O Brian's for hurricanes.
If you go during Mardi Gras there are parades every night in the French Quarter---not on Fat Tuesday though.

I don't like to down in the French Quarter early in the day because everything smells like vomit and all the worn out whores are still hanging around. French Market is OK though.

Interview With A Vampire was also filmed at Destrehan Plantation. There's another plantation not far down River Road from Destrehan Plantation called Ormond Plantation, it's interesting also. Destrehan is about 20 minutes from the city.

Magazine street in uptown has great restaurants and fun shops.

If you want restaurant advice, just pm me.

The Riverwalk has been updated and is nice.

The ghost/vampire/cemetery tours are fun.

Walking down and shopping on royal and Decatur is fun.

Bourbon st. during the day is completely different than at night.

Canal st is junky which is a shame because it used to be so nice.

The Shops at Canal Place is really nice. There's a nice movie theater in there where you can order food and drinks.

You should ride on the Riverboat Natchez.

The Carousel Bar is a must - someone else mentioned it.

If you stay downtown, just remember the majority of those hotels are in really old buildings with limited space so don't expect these super huge spacious rooms and en suite.

New Orleans is all about the food and culture. It's not uncommon to go have brunch and be there for 3-4 hours. That's just how it's done. You take your time when you're down there and savor everything. You don't rush when in NOLA. If you seriously want to know where to eat, I'll be more than happy to give you a list of the most delicious restaurants, not everywhere you eat down there will be good. I'm a born and raised NOLA girl - it's my city =)

I spent a couple of days in NOLA earlier this year. I went by myself and just walked and saw the sights. All of the above mentioned things were interesting. NOLA is a study in contrasts. Where else can you have an antique shop with a $200,000 liquor cabinet right next to a sex toy shop?

I second researching restaurants. The food is AMAZING. Make a reservation for one of the nationally known restaurants because the old world ambiance is worth the price tag, but don't miss the hole in the wall type places for great deals and food. Definitely hit the original Café du Monde for a blast from the past.

Parking is expensive, and there isn't much of it. The old part of NOLA isn't that big. You can walk it easily. I used the trolley cars to see the newer areas. You can buy a day pass and hop on and off at will and it works for any of the routes. I listened in on one of the cemetery tours while I was walking around and found it quite interesting. I now know where the expression "I wouldn't touch that with a 10 foot pole" came from and did you know they have "rental" mausoleums?

I saw the seedier side of NOLA, but I never felt like I was in danger. I was by myself, so I kept to the more crowded areas - during the day I felt comfortable to wonder at will. Bourbon street was a disappointment - It kinda looks like a horse that was rode hard and put up wet. I was disappointed in the number of souvenir shops that were everywhere - quite commercialized. I also booked a tour with a company called Airboat Adventures. It was neat to get to ride in the swamps and see the outdoor side of the area. There is a national park close to the area where I took the airboat ride - It had raised boardwalks where you could walk through swampy areas and see the vegetation up close.

I would also suggest researching to see if there are any home and garden tours going on while you are there. I did that while I was in Charleston and it is a wonderful way to get the chance to see the insides of the beautiful homes. You might also research what festivals are going on in local areas. There are some neat little towns just outside the big city.

Just a heads up. White people live in the towns that surround New Orleans not New Orleans itself. Stay in the tourist areas. Not real safe in other areas.

Yes, Bourbon St. is for the tourists who are there to party like rockstars all night. It's not everyone's cup of tea. Some people get a kick out of being able to walk out of a bar with their drink in hand.

Interesting how people view New Orleans so differently. For me it was the worse place we had ever visited and I couldn't get out of their fast enough. We were suppose to spend a few days and nights and I didn't make it to the afternoon..LOL

To each his own. If we all liked the same thing the world would be really really boring. Some embrace the culture and the uniqueness of the city. Some people think it's just too weird for their taste.

Yes, I know but very few that are above the station of the poor other races. The Garden District is upscale but that is a tiny part of NO. I guess you are considering Metarie, Algiers etc part of NO.

1/3 of the population of the city is white and that is for New Orleans, not for the New Orleans Metropolitan. Which if that was the case it would be way higher.

You can google and find all kinds of things to do around there. I would love to do the cemetery and Voodoo walking tour, theres a Haunted History tour I dont know if its the same as the Voodoo walking tour, I would love to see the Audubon Aquarium and I have heard the River Walk along the Mississippi is pretty cool. Ferry would be fun.

Look up Preservation Hall, it's a historic jazz music venue . You can also go to Pat O's - it's a bar but they have live music and the courtyard patio that is nice to sit on. The streetcars are fun to ride on. They aren't called trolleys down there, they're known as streetcars. You can go from Canal St. all the way up the river to uptown. There's a few different lines to take, the one that goes up St. Charles Avenue is pretty.

I love NO but I have been down on Bourbon Street about mid morning and the whole place smelled like vomit from the night before. They were washing down the streets. My grandparents grew up there and I have always gone to the more upscale places. There are a lot of neat thinks to do even in the French Quarter without hitting Bourbon Street. Restaurants are sensational. Probably why I am fat.

Thank you. Point made.

Actually no point was made. You said "white people live in the towns that surround New Orleans not New Orleans itself" and I corrected you by saying that 1/3 of the population was white. Your statement was incorrect.

Besides, if you hate this city so much, which clearly you do, why are you on a post about FUN things to do in this city with people who actually enjoy the city for what it is. Go troll another post.
