Bits and their mouthpieces

Elite Veteran Posts: 950 Location: MO	I am sure this has been discussed and I do plan on a search, but I wanted to get this out there in case I don't find what I am looking for. Chain, regular/square/twisted/skinny twisted/etc snaffle, dog bone, Dr. Bristol, mullen, copper wrapped straight piece.....I think you get my drift. LOL Now the questions.... which is the easiest on the horse, which is the hardest, which do you use and why? Are there specific purposes for some of these mouthpieces? I was in a convo and heard that a chain mouthpiece can be very harsh, and I have also heard it can be very easy on a hprse's mouth. so which one is it? Any opinions on the others? Any that are more harsh or more easy that I don't have listed? What happens when you add a noseband (rope, chain, steel) to bits, does it truly get their nose more? A completely generalized post for an in general discussion. :):)

Expert Posts: 1611	Chain mouth piece is actually very light because of all the "breaks." The more breaks in the mouth piece the "lighter" in the mouth because it conforms to their mouth. Some horses are "feely" and that conforming freaks them out and I've found that a mullen mouth rubber bit makes them happier. How did the person describe the chain being harsh? Was it a mule mouth piece chain they were referring to? Mule mouth and screw mouth are bits that aren't in my trailer anymore :-/ The smaller the width of the mouth piece the more "bit" it will have (a large twisted wire is less severe than a small twisted wire) Copper can be used to help one "engage" in the bit and carry it better. I've wondered about using copper in different ways myself and it seems really horse depended as to the ones that you can even see in actually difference in. I'm not a fine of nose band combo bits. If the horse came running in one and likes it cool I'll leave it but otherwise I'm not a combo person.

A Somebody to Everybody Posts: 41354 Location: Under The Big Sky Of Texas	All I like using are the Chain and dog bone mouth pieces..Any bit can be harsh in the wrong hand, and I have seen this often theres some that are just to heavey handed for lots of bits..
