my mare had it last year. I caught it about 4 months before she foaled. She was on smz, Pentoxifylline, and regimate up until she foaled. It's caused by a bacterial infection. A lot of times maybe fecal matter or other causes getting in there. Be careful. It could cause red bag delivery when the placenta unattaches before the foal is ready. I had my mare foal at a university because I was so concerned.

We had a mare with it last year. Seems like it was cleared up. We will see if everything is clear this year. There is a difference between a chronic and acute case. A chronic case can be very difficult to deal with and cause abortion, failure to get pregnant, and other birth issues. An acute case can usually be treated once with no real future problems. Mares can get it if they are live cover and the stallion's penis is not adequately cleaned. The same for AI when the equipment is not clean. Also, some mares just have naturally more open vulvas that open and close when they move and can get dirt and stuff in there. These mares usually need a Caslick's procedure.

Yeah I've had two mares get it within 3 years. My first mare ended up red bagging and the foal passed away becuase I didn't know the signs. This mare I caught early and we started her on smzs plus regumate. Feel like a horrible owner and didn't know what I could do differently so it wont happen again. Its been a wet soggy winter I wonder if that has anything to do with it. She's in a lot off the pasture. Thanks for sharing your story I appreciate it.

See and I wondered if it could be from AI. My mare is 8 months along due April 8th and I've used the same vet. Two different mares have gotten it now exactly almost the same time in January. One was 2015 and now just this week.
