This is a picture of my horses's hoof. It has been raining lots and I have been sick so I haven't been to the barn for weeks. Yesterday I went out and this is what I found when I cleaned the back feet. I believe you call this area the central sulcus. To me it looks scary but he isn't lame. it is just the back feet too. We pulled the shoes months ago because of contracted heels and we are trying to get more heel. This came on quick between trims. I am calling the vet tomorrow but was hoping someone knew what it was.

Looks like hes trying to shed the frog. The peeling layers can allow bacteria to get in and start an infection. Your farrier would probably trim off the excess/flappy frog. This happened to my mare last spring when it got so wet, she ended up sloughing off most of her frog and has grown a nice healthy solid frog back this winter. She's barefoot

Looks like hes trying to shed the frog. The peeling layers can allow bacteria to get in and start an infection. Your farrier would probably trim off the excess/flappy frog. Thrush has eaten away the outer part of the frog. What's left exposed is very tender. I wouldn't use anything caustic like Thrush Buster or Kopertox on it. You can buy mastitis tubes for cows that have antibiotic ointment in them and squirt it into the cracks. Make sure his feet stay as dry as possible and are clean. The tissue will eventually toughen up and regrow.

agree on this I also mixed betadine/hydrgen peroxide and syringed it directly into holes..

No odor at all which surprised me. I found a recipe for treatment by Pete Ramey since I have the stuff on hand. I will use that or get the mastitis medicine for it when I can get to town. Thanks all for your help. I feel a little bit better.
