Hate them. They mess up a beautiful face and as someone that worked for a ranch that did them, it very much hurts resale value. More people don't like them than those that do.

This rings very true. Any horse we sold with a jaw brand had better have a dang good set of skills and a heap of training to make up for the monstrosity on their jaw.

I'm not a fan of them. Doesn't make as much sense to me as putting one on their hip.

Don't like them at all.  Ruins a horse's profile.

I personally like them... BUT our brand is clean and simple. I think brands in general have gotten so gaudy and tacky, some it won't matter where you put them!

A lot of people put brands on the jaw because they are very hard to cover up. Anyone can shove a foot in front of the shoulder to hide a brand quickly. Hip and jaw are very hard to hide and cover.
I doubt I would ever brand on the face/jaw but I wouldn't over look a horse because of it.

ETA I have a shoulder brand LOL but if anyone steals my mare, they'll give her back pretty quickly

Mine's headshy because of it. He's just a yearling and I don't think he was sedated when he was branded.

Most are ran up a cow alley and blocked in so they can't freak out...and often a rope around their neck to keep them from trying to flip over or get away. You obviously can't have a halter on them to brand there. I would rather have a brand stuck on me on the fat of my behind any day or even shoulder before my face. OUCH!!!

In over 15 years of freeze branding horses, we have found a jaw brand is one of the easiest positions to freeze brand a horse.  However, we will not brand a horse on the jaw with one of the heavier duty brass brands on the market.  The density of them can cause nerve damage to easily so we will only do jaw brands with irons we produce  ourselves.  I think a nice jaw brand is beautiful and noticable if you are branding for the reason brands came in to being, which was ownership identification, not as a decorative mark placed on a horse.

Interesting - first I'm hearing of such a thing. We brand on the hip, left preferably, and have one that carries his breeders brand on his shoulder. I don't think I'd like a jaw brand. I probably wouldn't pass up a great horse over one, but if I was trying to choose between multiple prospects it would probably detour me from that one...

as a brand inspector in one of the strictest brand states, the majority of us prefer to look at hip or shoulder brands. Doesn't matter if someone runs an iron with a previous brand, if you don't have a bill of sale or own the brand on the horse, you don't get ownership papers. Here in Wy we dont brand to make them pretty.

I guess i'll be the odd one out, my gelding has one. Own son of Eddie Stinson out of a super nice 1D mare that was rasied and trained by a dear friend, this gelding is a ham! His jaw line is so masculine, it looks SO good. Its just a simple "DM" with the "D" a little above and the "M" connected to the "D"

Like above said as long as they are clean and simple i love them! i would personally rather have one branded on the jaw than hip of shoulder any day, as long as its clean and simple.

I get so much crap from people about his brand and how terrible i am for doing it. (even though i didnt do it lol)

I have a mare that has a cheek brand on each side. luckily they are hot brands so they are not as noticeable but I wish she didn't have them.

She came off the pitchfork ranch in Texas and has 4 brands all together: 2 cheek, 1 left shoulder and 1 below her left side if tail head.

Our brand is a jaw brand and I like it...we've branded (freeze) several and never had any issues with nerve damage or having a head shy horse afterwards. If we were to get a new brand we would probably get a shoulder or hip brand but this was given to my husband by his grandmother so we use it....it's a simple diamond quarter circle so it looks good. I would not shy away from buying a good horse because of where the brand is.

Here is a pic of our brand:

I wouldn't be turned off by one.  Up here in Montana, a lot of the really neat old timey horse brands are jaw brands.   Usually the jaw brands are neat and clean, I've also have seen some really cool OLD caricature brands on cheeks.

I posted mine but here it is again. It doesn't show as well on this horse now as she has lightened with age but it does look nice on the darker horses.

I don't mind them. I saw a horse with a really nice and simple one and it didn't look any different than any other brand on a horse.
