Location: Cocoa, Florida | So were helmets and fringe just a temporary fad? I see although Fallon still wears her helmet, she has lost the fringy breast collar and blingy look. Yes she says for speed but I also see some of her followers loosing the breast collars and wild colors here lately. I've also seen a decrease in the number of people wearing helmets, here locally at least. Trends are fun, but they never last!
I'm a plain leather find somtheing that matches everything look! I also wear my helmet while riding my colts lol. |

As to fringe, it's a fad just like sparkly bling etc. I prefer pretty tooling on high quality leather. Never goes in or out of style. |

| I just got back from Dixie Nationals in Jackson MS and about half the people had on helmets. That is not my area of the country so I do not know if that is the norm. Around here, I used to be the only person with a helmet but now there are quite a few. |

| Feels more normal to me to ride with a helmet than without...so it's not going anywhere. But I refuse to pay big $$ for a crazy colored one when I replace it every year to 18mo or when I fall.
Fallon left Ranch Dressin who made a lot of her crazy outfits, so I suspect that's where the lack of fringe was. Kimmie Wall I think is still sponsored by them and was pretty bright, no fringe though.
I've never understood it on breastcollars, I feel like it would get sweaty and nasty. But then again my everyday working tack is what I run in too. |

| I think all of those trends eventually fade away. I have seen more helmets than ever, so I don't think that is considered a "trend." However, I remember when those HUGE blingy breastcollars that looks like belts were "in" a few years ago. Then it went to the more like southwestern Aztec look and then fringe was added. Just as I remember all the bright colored Rockies and crazy colored shirts. I for one, had orange, yellow, purple, blue pants LOL.
I really like FT new look, I like the more western look but with still some brighter colors incorporated in. I did ask on the model search thing is she was still affiliated with ranch dressn and whoever was posting it for her, said she was so not sure if that rumor is true.
I think trends and fads come and go and that will never change. I have noticed the mohair and beaded look seems to be coming back around. |

Helmets have always been part of the English riders world and I think it will be for the Western riders too as time gos by. |

| Fringe has never really not been in style.... It has become super popular recently but has always been a staple in western fashion and lifestyle. It may decrease in popularity for a bit in the future but will come back around, just like bell bottoms :)
I havent noticed a decrease in helmets or fringe in my area. |

I just see so many Fallon followers loosing the breast collars now also, wondering if she took the helmet off big they would also?
I personally have never been a big "fad" follower but I am a fan of the beaded tack sets and the Navajo designs are classy and cute. My favorite breast collar is the one I won from nbha, it has more sentimental value to me and I'd rather show it off. I'm also cheap though, i could put $500 to better use then a tack set!
Oh and I love my nylon bridles, easy to change bits! Nylon will never go out for me |

You go out there and make a good run, that will grab my attention. I am into denim shirts, plain leather belt, and super nice hand tooling on quality leather (Hooligan Designs, Sue Smith and Danyelle Campbell look), my choice of hardware doesn't make me win, quality equipment sure helps though! |

As far as the fringe, I think leather fringe has always been around in western fashion to an extent. Jackets, purses... The breastcollar thing is recent but will come and go I'm sure like other trends.
I like fringe but don't have any currently. I sold mine bc everyone else had one also haha.

I refuse to not have bangs! Until last fall when I chopped my hair off I still rocked the scrunchies on occasion (they are great for keeping various things together in the horse trailer too, which is probably why I could never find any...). Up until a couple of years ago I STILL got spiral perms.
I completely remember pinch rolling jeans in the day! That skill has been very handy with a rodeo queen daughter by the way. She wears her jeans extra long so they don't scooch up and show her boots riding. With spurs on it's never a problem. BUT, when she has on "appearance only" boots without spurs, her jeans drag, and I think just folding under looks tacky for queens. So...I had an epiphany a few years ago...I "pinch" her jeans on the inside ankle like I was going to roll them, then put a single safety pin on the inside instead. She can ride in them then switch to non-spur boots and they don't drag. With the pant legs stacked you can't tell. Now (if I remember before we go somewhere with new ones), all her queening jeans have that pinch tuck tacked down - but we still use a safety pin in a pinch.
Thanks to being an 80s girl I can do big hair (queen hair) like a pro. I have not mastered the sleeker look of today though, sadly. |

Location: Eastern OH but my heart is in WV | I think helmets will only continue to become more used. My daughter is 15 and has been wearing one since the first time she was on a horse. It is second nature for her, her generation and those younger. Even on the rodeo scene (for barrels and poles), helmets are becoming a normal sight. Went to a barrel race over the weekend and even saw a couple of men wearing them
With the internet and social media, the stories of what can happen are so easily spread these days. Makes the awareness of the importance of head protection in your face. I know it makes me think twice before getting on. |

After not riding for 10 years, I started back up and was a TOTALLY different rider, mostly because I am 50 lbs. heavier, I think. I lost all my confidence and balance was off. So I started really observing and thinking about what my problem was other than being fat. I realized that I was not brave at all anymore, so I bought a helmet and I felt more confident, started yoga, got stronger, more confidence. I still am not fearless like I was when I was younger, but that helmet sure helped me out. |

| For me the decision to wear a helmet was a gradual one. The idea was planted when a man I greatly admired growing up had a bad wreck on a horse and hit his head. He never recovered - lost his memory and seemed to only have the mental capacity of someone around age 10. It was hard to hear him call me an angel for sitting and talking to him at shows and I saw the toll his care took on his family. I always felt dorkey in a hat and had to wear them for rodeos and registered shows. Finally decided that a helmet suited me better. My niece turned me onto some English styles and I found what was the most comfortable to me.
As far as fads go, I think the helmets are here to stay. I'm too cheep to follow fads in tack, but I do love CLASSY tooled leather, some turquoise and have seen some beautiful beaded work. |

Fallon's endorsement planted the seed, but this story pushed me over the edge about a year ago this time.

I grew up riding hunter jumper and trail riding for fun, in the English world you didn't dare get on your horse, or pony without your helmet on! And let me tell you, they were a LOT more expensive then the western helmets these days! So wearing a helmet on a horse is nothing new, I was surprised when I started barrel racing as a teenager that no one wore helmets. Fallon definitely made it "cool" to wear helmets again, which I think is a great thing.
Now could you still fall and break your neck, back, etc with a helmet on, sure but the accidents I've seen that have killed or caused major Brian damage have been - running out of an open gated arena and hit concrete, running back into the alleyway and hit the gate or panels, watched a girl and her horse jump over the gate and he landed on top of her, etc. so yeah anything can happen but I'd rather have the safety of knowing that my noggin is as protected as it can get! Why do you think cross country riders wear vests too?
We all take a risk every time we swing a leg over a horse but if I can do something to prevent it from being worse, I think that's a great idea, and quite frankly I don't care what anyone thinks either!

I wear a helmet because I'm a mom and wife and both my husband and son asked ... okay ... told me they wanted me to wear one. I feel weird but it makes them feel better. Truthfully, it is more comfortable than a hat. |

I think for me it was having kids. I want to be a responsible role model. And my husband made it a requirement lol. He said it would make him feel better if I used one. Can't blame the man for caring about his wife. I will say that I do not find them comfortable so I am still getting used to it.
I need to find me some of those banana clips.
I know FT is a touchy subject on here but I tried one of hers at a tack store the other day and it was incredibly comfortable. I don't normally wear a helmet mainly because I always hated how they fit but I am not thinking I may jump on the bandwagon since they are so comfortable. I am sure there are others just as comfortable but I was impressed!
Fallon has her own helmets, I thought the brand was Troxel?
Troxel makes various helmets, my nieces have one that I don't think is nearly as comfortable. So my suggestion is to try the FT line because they were more comfortable than the other Troxel my niece uses. |

Not to hijack the thread but...what started ya'll wearing helments? Injury or just because you've read about injuries or to be proactive in prevention?
Honestly just curious...have a lot of horse people in my family that have never worn one so it's very foreign to me. I've noticed more helments than usual, but not enough for it to be considered "normal" wear either.
My husband asked that I start wearing one when we got married. I'm an attorney, and spent so long on my education, he told me it was stupid not to wear one, and that I'd never let him compete on his dirtbike without one.
A few months later I got a new colt that was difficult, and it was amazing how much more confident I was dealing with her little breakdowns with that helmet on.
As to the fringe stuff - the breastcollars were always ok for me, if not really to my taste, but I had to draw the line at the ugly halters with the 5 inch fringe hanging down the cheek pieces. Man, if that's being in style, I'll be in with the 80s girls and the scrunchies and permed hair. Glad to see that trend dying. |

I was just bucked off a colt last week, broke my foot, sprained an ankle, have bruised rips and pelvis but... my head is safe because I used my nieces extra helmet. Like I said, I think after trying that one on, I may need to reconsider the hat. |

| OhMax - 2017-02-20 11:50 AM Feels more normal to me to ride with a helmet than without...so it's not going anywhere.
But isn't Ranch Dress'n her own company? I think they've just shifted from tye dye and fringe to a more "cowgirl" look to try and keep sales up. |

| I also grew up riding with one as a hunter/jumper.
Went away from it for a little while or would wear it sometimes and sometimes not.
What I found was I noticed it more when I wasn't wearing it than when I was. And I wasn't as brave a rider without it.
What solidified it for me was about 18 months ago when I took a spill off a nasty colt. He dumped me once without a helmet on. It wasn't the worst fall but I did hit my head. A week later he did it again, this time with the helmet on, and this time worse. Helmet and all a nurse friend insisted I go to the ER based on concussion symptoms (I actually got back on and rode him for another half hour or so, I don't remember most of it. I do remember having been on him for a bit and wondering why I didn't have my spurs on. Turns out I said something about maybe hooking him with one before the buck and took them off.). The X-ray in the ER also turned up something funky, not concerning enough to admit me but for 3 days before they could get me in for an outpatient MRI I got to fret over the 1st fall without a helmet and the possibility of a blood clot. It turned out to be nothing but that whole experience means I can count on one hand the number of times I've swung a leg without a helmet since then.
I'm certain I'll be the only breakaway roper at the rodeo in a helmet, but I'll be ****ed if I care. |

She was a 50% owner, I believe, and for whatever reason has 'left' the brand behind. Hence the slow shipping rate they have had since the new year. It's now one girl trying to manage the whole thing by herself.

Same! I don't have a "go-to-town" tack set. The stuff I run in is the same stuff I ride colts and move cows in. I look at that and think "man, that would look like crap in about 2 weeks on my place." Not that it looks great to start with!

I heard this on another thread also but when she did the modeling search, there was a post about dressing in all her brands and Ranch Dress'n was listed. I asked if she was still affiliated with it and whoever posted it said yes... so I dunno? |

However, my head is so dang big that none of the cute helmets fit me! I very much want the FT white leopard and it's just too small. |

Glad im not the only one who has a head to big for the FT ones lol. I ended up with a tipperary since they came in an xl. I started wearing one because i bought another young horse and you never know what could happen. They have minds of their own and something they see daily can become a horse eating object quicl |

I had 2 Troxels and I hated the way they fit and I couldn't get them off fast enough everytime I wore them. I had a friend that told me that Helmets are shaped differently and I needed to go and try different makers out to find one that fit my head and when I did, it would be very comfortable. She was right and the Tipperary Sportage fits great and is very comfortable plus it keeps the sun off of my head.
I started to wear one after I had two different horses fall when I was riding on our property. My husband told me to go get a helmet and I did but it would be years before I ran with one. |

lol I don't think they're quite out of style yet but I was referring to Fallon more then anything dropping the fringe breast collars now and her followers who are doing the same. I think fringe may always be in to an extent.... I personally have never had any breast collar fringe but I have had fringe on the back of a rodeo shirt that I LOVED for years and years.
I just notice in MY area less helmets then before, so I hope it was more for safety and not just a "fad" that may fade away. |

I think helmets will only continue to become more used. My daughter is 15 and has been wearing one since the first time she was on a horse. It is second nature for her, her generation and those younger. Even on the rodeo scene (for barrels and poles ), helmets are becoming a normal sight. Went to a barrel race over the weekend and even saw a couple of men wearing them
With the internet and social media, the stories of what can happen are so easily spread these days. Makes the awareness of the importance of head protection in your face. I know it makes me think twice before getting on.
Our local saddle club made an incentive for men to wear helmets while competing in their events and a bunch of them banded together and started this "real men wear helmets" thing and I LOVE it. I'm talking teenage boys to grandpas wearing the helmets, they even take some extras around to shows with them lol

We won't let her have it til Monday (her actual birthday), but she's so excited! (She knows what she's getting. . . ) I just had to open it, and it's really pretty. I personally wouldn't do the fringe, but I'm still hoping she'll let me put it on Two for a photo op since she's black and there are some black stones in the set. I'll never own anything like that, so it's the only way my poor mare will get to be that shiny! |

Fringe makes everything look bigger than it actually is............ put it on your body anywhere it makes it look wider, thicker, etc. It is not flattering on any body horse or human. To each their own. |

This so hits home for me. Due to health issues for both my horse and me, we haven't competed regularly for several years. We're finally both well at the same time and I had a friend help me get the horse back in shape. HOwever, I find now that as I'm starting to ride again the confidence and balance is not what it used to be. I'm also a senior rider which adds another helmet reason. I think my balance is better than I may think it is, so maybe getting a helmet will help my confidence. Thanks for posting.

Color ,flash, bling for Rodeo is a no brainer, look good, people cheer, horse runs faster... it is a spectator sport and they provide your pay.Even at open races , it can help your confidence. Horses KNOW when they look good too.
I have worn helmets since college ( early80s) when I started jumping. I wore them for English, working colts, trail riding , galloping racehorses etc but not to barrel race . DUMB. My kids have only rode w them. So they( my 90s lids) gathered dust a lot for the2's until several falls and a very tall horse, new styles , time to upgrade! Love the new Troxels much better than 25 yrs ago. I was the only one around , now it is half the people, mostly over 50 and under 20. I am much happier in a helmet, light, airy, stays on and costs less than pricey hats. |
