Is there anything I can put on a hoof to prevent abscesses? My poor gelding keeps getting them. None of my other horses have gotten a single one but he's had 3 in the past 6 months! What can I do for this poor fella?

From my experience is your horse abcessing in same foot? If so something is going on. In my case it was a karatoma tumor it took surgery after that he quit abcessing. good luck

Try adding copper and zinc to his diet...my horse never showed lameness but had thrush and after adding a copper and zinc mixture, both hind feet blew abcesses. I was surprised. Work from the inside out.

Used to have problems with abcesses when I was younger. Then I bought a gelding that already had been getting cut too short for a long period of time, so I sent him to my shoer that I had been used for a very long time. He had abcess after abcess, rotating feet. I figured there was something weong, Granted i loved my farrier. Really good guy, good friend but I had to cut him loose. No hard feelings, Being that I had apprenticed under him for about a year, I knew I could take care of him.
So I pulled his shoes and let him grow out, kept him barefoot and evenly balanced. Then you know what happended? No more hoof problems. He was sounder as the day was long and he started to actually RUN because his feet didn't hurt anymore.
I'd check with your farrier or get a new one. A lot of farriers like to push their feet back and "stand them up" which causes a lot of problems. Get a good natural barefoot farrier and I bet the problems will go away.

I would take the soft feet problem and go from there ..
After trimming just wet the trimmed area and the sole and heel
down with turpentine .... just wet them down ... hooves will not
soak up liquids .. and then shoe them
Just wrap a hand towel around the top of the hoof at hair line
to prevent it scalding the hair line when you wet it down with
a rag soaked in turpentine ..
It will dry and close the laminae and tuffen the heel and soles to
keep any sand grains from getting into the hoof ...
This is also a great treatment for a horse that is trimmed too
short or for a hot nail ... will take the pain away and harden
the hoof ..

Do you stall? Asking because I had a mare who would abscess when stalled next to a certain horse. (at night only) Always a back good. Turns out she was kicking the stall.

^^^^^this. Same thing with my gelding. Always in the right hind bc that's the leg he ALWAYS kicks back with even when standing in pasture and gets irritated bc he wants dinner. Just kicks at air. He's a PITA
