| Can we talk about ulcer prevention…What do you use that WORKS? I've researched and read all the threads on here and there are just so many options. Equisure, T.H.E., DAC, U-gard, aloe vera juice, alfalfa pellets and beet pulp, the list goes on. I just got a 4 yr old mare that is the nervous type. She doesn't eat like I would like her to and is sensitive at her ulcer pressure points. She has good condition and a healthy coat. Previous owner had her on U-Gard pellets but she sorted them out of her grain. I'm going to give her omeprazole for 30 days to make sure that her belly is healthy and then I want to put her on something to keep it healthy. I am slowly switching her from her grain to Renew Gold and Alfalfa/Orchard Grass hay. Tell me what you use and love. I don't want to waste my money on magic dust.

| I have had very good luck using marshmellow root and aloe. I buy from Curost at time or buy in bulk. It has worked very well on several horses and I had one who we had battled ulcers for several years and finally have her in good shape after using this. |

Agreed!!
I have all my horses on Equisure to prevent ulcers.
You can also use it to heal the ulcers and then use it as a preventative.

| I have my mare on beet pulp and no cereal grains. I purchased abler product to see if it helps her ulcers. She did improve with aloe juice added to her feed and a joint supplement (her stifles were very sore). She also has to be outside all the time, she doesn't handle being stalked very well. Unfortunately, you'll probably have to do trial and error for your horse. |

Location: North Dakota | Uekele gut has certainly helped settle our chronic ulcer horse down. He shouldn't have a problem but he works himself into the squirty poops. I like the idea of the marshmallow root but hated not having a "formulation" that is effective (I used to buy it bulk) The uekele gut has it formulated well enough that I give a rounded scoop daily and he seems much better (or as good as he's going to get) When we start competing this spring he will get 2 scoops a day. (I have run 2 rounds of omeprazole through this horse-he's on pasture-round bale and very minimal concentrate <2#) |

Location: Deep South | The diet change is going to be the biggest factor in prevention, so you're already headed in the right direction. Never ride her on an empty stomach. I feed my colts 1lb of alfalfa pellets while saddling to help prevent stomach acid from sloshing around while we're working. Add a paste every time before you load her on the trailer and every day that you're away from home. You'll just have to find what works best for your mare. There's so many opinions because results vary. UlcerGard, oxy-ulcer, equi-sure, gastro-plex. All of these products are backed by professional's testimonies that are hauling and using their barrel horses hard. |

How much do you give daily? I have used it in the past and now that I have my horse feeling good I am ready to start riding again. He has lost most of the sight in one eye so when riding out of the arena, he is a little nervous. He is a nervous hauler and is definitely a basket case when trailering out to ride at new places. |

My ulcer horses and young horses in training get 5ml/daily at home, bump up to 10ml on my ulcer horses whenever I ride. Every horse I own gets 10ml day before leaving and everyday on the road. Also 10ml before they ever get into a trailer, even if its just to head to the arena 10 minutes away.
I actually keep a bottle in my jacket pocket because it is handy to have for cold spells or a horse thats a little under the weather. HUGE believer. Have not used a single ulcer med since trying it a year ago.

The maintence dose is 10mls, there are so many different ways to dose. For horses in training and the worrier kind you really get the best results giving it daily and I think it works the best if you dose when you are saddling to ride. Any time they stress they over produce cortisol in the stomach so giving the dose at the most stressful time gives you the best results. Right now I am only riding 3 days a week and hauling on the weekends normally one day so mine are getting it every other day basically- everytime i catch them to ride they get a dose. The ulcer doseage is a little different because you really have to have 10 days of 10mls TWO times a day to get a nice crust over the ulcers and really start the healing process fully, then 10mls a day for another 20 days. From that point you have to maintain to keep them from coming back, and that really depends on your training/hauling/horse- on the min you need to give it 3 days a week to keep the acid nuetralized. |

Ive personally never felt like we lost any run and we use it on our racehorses, they get a dose before they head to the paddocks to be saddled. It has somewhat of a calming effect because it settles the stomach so you remove most of that nervous energy but not the actual run when its time to do the job. |

The best route is always orally, sometimes it takes a couple doses but once they figure out that it makes them feel so much better they will take the syringe from you most of the time wanting it. IF you can not adminstor orally next best is in a bucket of water, its a basic soluation and water soluible.
To treat ulcers you need to give 10mls TWO times a day for 10 days, then do to once a day. Like I said above the best time to dose is right before they are going to be the most stress- riding, hauling, etc. The easiest way I have found is to give it when I catch them to ride on the ones we are using.

Location: Oklahoma | What works for my horse is DRAW 30 cc a day for 30 days and then use whenever. 37.95 a bottle and 900 cc bottle My horse was really showing signs gave 30 cc next day ate all hay up and points not so sore I have done this on a couple horses works wonders and plus it is good for lots of things! can Use under BOT |

Location: Illinois | I tried about everything there was for 3-4 years before discovering MVP Gastro-Plex and that's been the only thing that has worked for me. I gave mine a full month of a compounded omeprazole/ranitidine/sucralfate paste to treat any pre-existing ones and started him on the Gastro-Plex paste at the same time. Haven't needed any omeprazole since and it's been great. It was costing me $40-50 in paste every weekend to run him and the Gastro-Plex is much cheaper than that each month.
