I have a mare that I used to run but decided to breed so I could focus on some young ones. Anyway, wowzer she had a gorgeous colt! So last year I bred her back to a different stallion to see what we get. I would almost love to breed her again, since I'm so busy and really do not have a slot for her in the trailer since my kids are now competing as well, but is that too much? Should I give her a year off?
Anyway, my question is how many colts do your broodmares have, and when do you give them a break? She looks amazing, is a great mom, and I want more of her bloodlines on my farm. She is 11.
We purchased a mare that was in foal and she foal in 2014 - after he was weaned I continued to compete on her. In 2015 we tried breeding her and she didnt settle, so I continued to compete on her. 2016 she settled right away and is now in foal. I will bring her back to barrels after the foal is weaned and probably won't breed her for quite a few years as she is young and I really enjoy competing on her.
We have only been breeding one mare lately. She has had 4 in a row without missing a year and we have her booked for her fifth. We started breeding her at 14. She always takes first season and is a excellant mother and her foals are phenominal. We will keep her bred every year untill she tells us other wise.
