Location: In the land of peanuts and cotton | I haven't been able to decide what to do with my life. Ive thought several times about going to Mortuary school. A close friend was shot last week and it's made decide that's what I want to do. I like to help people but I don't like working with the public. What I realized last week is the family's of people that I would be working on are having the worst time of their lives. If I can help make it just a little better or a little easier then I would love that. Last week I wanted to help and felt so helpless because there wasn't anything I could do. I knew there wasn't but I wanted so badly to be able to help ease some of the pain that his wife and little girl were feeling. My main concern is being too emotional. I am a VERY emotional person and I'm scarred that would interfere with my job. Idk if there is any on here but if your one tel me about it. |

Well someone has to do this {being a Mortician} My husband has a customer that is one and this job is very stressful, but he says he does it for the love of others and this man has a big heart. His wife passed away about 2 years ago not for sure if hes the one that took care of his wife, but I do know that he did his mother in law.. |

Location: on the fine line between insanity and geniusness | I have a friend that is one. I know it sounds strange, but he enjoys his job. He said in an odd way it is very peaceful. Since he just prepares bodies and doesn't do any of the funeral directing roles, it's a very quiet, single-person kind of job. He told me once that the hardest bodies to do are the ones belonging to children. He's young, in his thirties, but said he knew they would never get any easier. His entire family is in the funeral home business so he's been around it all his life, but he really enjoys it and makes REALLY good money. And not to be tacky, but there is definitely job security there. |

Location: Gainesville, TX | I think this job is often viewed as macabre enough that many people overlook its necessity. Its one of those special jobs that take people with a certain kind of endurance, kind of like teaching kindergartners. In India and even ancient Judaism, tending the dead was considered a lower place in society, but for our modern society I feel there is less stigma. That being said, it is the type of position that offers tremendous comfort to the living (which funerals are for anyway, not the dead). And yes, job security is certainly not an issue as someone else mentioned. I applaud your decision to pursue studies in this area. I have had a couple friends from high school who went this direction and have been very happy long term with their decision. |
