My Purina triple cleaned oats were pretty dusty it seemed. Is there anything I can do besides wetting feed to reduce the dust? It doesnt seem like I have many more options for oats other than crimped and steamed rolled oats but I really want to keep them whole. I live in Northern MN, so not many resources to choose from either. Im new to the oat scene. Any advice is greatly appreciated!
Its still really cold up here and wetting the feed or adding oil is pretty difficult this time of year. Just wondering if there is anything else I can do to minimize all of the dust
Add an oil to the oats when you feed them till you use up the dusty bag? I use Camelina oil personally but there are other options as well. I have found nice oats at fleet farm if you have one of those.
I buy oats by the truckload and sometimes it does get a little dusty. I'm in NE SD so I feel the pain of the cold. I learned a trick this past winter. I have a heated water bucket in the barn for the dogs and cats. I put water in an old Healthy coat squirt bottle (I think its a quart size) and put the bottle in the heated water bucket. Still plenty of room for the dogs and cats to drink but it keeps my water bottle unthawed. Works pretty slick.
We order oats by the truck load from the elevator. We have them add minerals, vitamins but we also have them add a TEEEEENY bit of molasses to cut the dust. It's not enough to even hardly see it on the oats, but they do smell good :) Cuts the dust wonderfully, and we don't have time to water/oil each bucket of feed when we are feeding 35-40 head of horses. No issues with the horses getting hot or acting goofy.
