They have a really nice RV park on the grounds.  Get there as early as you can for the best spots.  You will have a blast.

Anyone know why they don't have an event page yet? Last year, that page alone was helpful because so many people asked questions on it.
The RV park has limited spots and most ppl get there at midnight on Wednesday (Tuesday night) so they can get good parking spots. I opted out of that mess last year and just stayed in the back 40 with my generator and I enjoyed it! It is a lot of fun, and a lot of ppl. Moving in was the most stressful part to me, everything after that was awesome. They only give you like 15 minutes to park in front of the barn, unload all your horse stuff and horse, and you have to move. Its good to know where your stall is exactly, and have everything organized ahead of time so you know where to go and have your stuff easy accessible. Its also a good idea to rent a golf cart if you can afford it because the RV park and most regular parking is a long way from the barns. I didn't last year but my husband told me we couldn't go back if I didn't get him a golf cart to ride around in lol

Thanks for the input!  I've also been told to bring really good mats and a ton of shavings.  LOL.....I don't know about the getting there at midnight thing - I'm 13 hours away and don't think I could handle that after spending all that time on the road (at midnight!)

It'll be our first time as well. We opted on getting a room in a hotel nearby. Hope we can park pretty close with the trailer but we also get an extra stall for tack/ food.
I have heard horro stories about the waiting in line.... to check in..... to get your jacket.... but I guess we will just make it a girls weekend and relax and just take it one day at a time!
Very excited about going!!

Yea, we decided to get a room back in Februari. Not sure how fast the hotels fill up. But I can cancel up to the day before for free. So even if we changed our minds we could do so.
Although after reading everything I think it might be nice just to have a little more room to move around. Expecially since it is more than just the average 2-3 day race.
We usually have hand carts to tote around bales and stuff, and I am used to walking, so we are trying without a golf cart... might regret that, but we will see.

This is my first time as well and pretty excited and nervous. Shooting to get in line for no later than 11-12 Tues night.  I was told to bring mats for stalls, and be prepared for all weather conditions for you and your horse.
So when you check in, that is when you get your jacket?
what all will you need to ck in?  coggins, health papers......what else?
do they send you a packet a head of time showing your draw and what arena you run?

That's probably the only thing that I dread. Still not sure I'll get to go or not.

The insurance race is for those that don't make it back to the finals on Sunday. If you entered the insurance race but end up making it back to the finals you wil forgo your insurance race entry.

Moving in and getting an RV spot is definitely the most difficult part.  We have always arrived for the Late Tues/Early Weds move in.  Even so there is always time to be setting in line waiting to pull down to your barn.  We prepurchase bedding from on site feed store.  It is in your stalls and ready to spread when you arrive.  We speed things up by one of us going on down to our stalls on foot while the other person waits in line with the rig.  The person going to the stalls can go ahead and bed the stalls and hang buckets so that horses can be unloaded immediately when the rig can pull down.  We have everything organized so that it can be unloaded from the trailer and into the feed/tack stall.   We also have a wagon to help move stuff.

Be prepared for the cluster at the RV Park.  Things can get tight and some people can get ugly.  Couple of years ago there was a lady trying to save spots for her friends even though she did not go ahead and pay for the spots.  She was screaming and cussing and pretty much making a donkey of herself. She even called the OKC police and tried to have people towed.   We parked, got snacks and drinks and just sat down on the tailgate of our truck and watched the show!!

No, you run 3 if you are in the insurance race - regardless.  Race 1, Race 2, and either the finals (if you qualify) or the insurance race  :-)

That is crazy.. I am going to be hauling alone as of right now so I am worried about the moving in part and getting it all done in a timely matter.

Awesome idea!!!  That's being prepared!  I've decided to just get a hotel room and skip the real madness.  What would be the best place for leaving empty trailer - or is there a designated place?  I'm excited to finally be going but all that race/barn stuff is confusing!  LOL

I don't remember what all they did for "assisting" but I think they just help you carry stuff, theres people driving around on golf carts willing to help everywhere.

When you pull up to the barn you just park in front of them and unload your stuff (hence the 15 minute window since there are so many ppl that are waiting) then from there you park wherever you plan to park your trailer all weekend. Most people that are not parking in the RV park, go straight from the barns to a big parking lot. It will make more sense when you get the map. I cant remember if they send you one or if you have to print it, but you need it for sure!
And the barn/races aren't as confusing once you get there or look at a map.
And, I did not know for like 2 days last year, they have round pens beside the last barn, they are free to use for like 30 minutes at a time but do not leave your horse in them, they will lock them in.

Looking at the schedule is very overwhelming, so once I got my draw numbers, I highlighted what days I would run and wrote what number I would run and about what time down beside it so I wouldn't miss my turn.

They run everyone in sections so if you are a high number like 1200, you have to figure out what number you will actually run on your days. They will explain all that in the packet.

During the "assisted move in" there are people driving around in golf carts who will load your stuff on their carts and haul it to the stalls. It does save a lot of the pack horse work!! The only issue could be that the RV park will fill up before you get a spot. Their are waaayyy more campers then there are RV spots.

Was thinking of running on generator as well - my only concern was having enough water to last through the extended weekend. Does the fairgrounds have showers or access to water? Not really looking forward to fighting the whole RV madness

I am with you, I have my generator in my trailer just in case but I am too concerned about water lasting from Wed-Sunday and I also wondered about waste station.  Are the RV spots full service with septic or just offer water and electric.

No sewer in the RV park, just electric and water.

The RV park does have a main dump station and you can fill up with water as well there. Each spot does not have it's own dump spot. I beleive the restroom facility has showers as well.

We have been to the OK City Fairgrounds many times. There are several motels within a mile or two of the fairgrounds. We have always stayed in a motel. We also purchased a tack/feed stall for several traveling together.....try to get a block of stalls with friends, if possible. Now to the downside:

LOCK your vehicles and tack stalls ANY time that you are away from them (even for 5 minutes)

DO NOT leave anything in your vehicles (at the fairgrounds or motel) that you wouldn't want stolen.

At the motel, do NOT back your vehicle into the parking space....makes it easier for them to break in and just drive away.

Since they "can" just climb over and toss tack out, w
e always hang our saddles with bridles in the BACK of the tack stall. Run a chain through the gullet with headstall and then padlock.  We also put chains and locks on the stalls....some people worry about fire, etc....but the chances of your horse being saved during a fire (locked stall or not) are slim.

I think that is the only thing that is unpleasant. Still hate to be missing it but the Christmas snowstorm here was a big set back as far as preparing.
