I am about to be registering a 4 year old (yes I should have done this a long time ago). I have all of my paperwork ready to go. What do I need from the stallion owner and how much does it cost them to release a breeders certificate?

Usually the stud fee but can be any amount the stallion owner wants. The breeders certificate should have been issued at the time the horse was foaled if all fees were paid to the stallion owner.

If they just need to add the mare to the report-say a mare was called open so wasn't added to the stallion report...then foals anyways, it's around $30 I think late fees to add mare. But if stud fee wasn't paid etc, they may want that now. As a previous stallion owner, unless fees weren't paid, it is often in the stallion owners best interest to have those babies registered.

If they included the mare on the stallion breeding report, it shouldn't cost anything more. If not, they will need to revise the SBR for the year that mare was bred. That will cost a late fee + the mare fee. I don't know what that is because so far I've never missed the deadline and my reports haven't needed to file additional mares. I would contact the stallion owner or AQHA could tell you if your horse is on the SBR.
