I don't want to screw up!

In light of Fallon and the other thread about ourselves being in the best shape we can so as to not hinder our horses, does anyone have any eating healthier, workout, etc tips to share? I figure it wouldn't be a bad thing to try and get other ideas. I struggle so much with eating right. Also, I seem to have a deep seated aversion to most healthy foods .  I know I'm not going to accomplish my fitness goals if I don't change my diet and up my workout routine, I just struggle with motivation. Any tips appreciated!

I buy the quest bar knock offs from Costco and have one for lunch and dinner. Also the boxed organic pre-washed salad mix from WalMart, and every day I make a massive salad with that, a handful of snap peas, a radish or two, and some tomatoes. I just use balsamic vinegar as dressing. I'm steadily losing about 10ish lbs a month.

We don't eat anything were can't pronounce, so I cook a lot. I read ingredients. If I don't know what it is, I don't feed it to my family. One of the teachers at the kids school has had cancer twice, and was talking about how she loves little ceasears pizza. I didn't say anything, but I bet she wonders why she's had cancer twice.

If you fail to plan, then plan to fail! Plan your meals, workouts.... set small realistic goals along the way... it's got to be a lifestyle change, not a diet or a 12 week plan... I know a gal that's starting a 500 calorie a day plan for 30 days... I can almost guarantee that won't last, probably not even the 30 days... that's unrealistic. .. I started thinking about my food as "fuel" not food! Small balanced frequent meals to keep your metabolism firing... lots and lots of water to drink as well. Get a good multi vitamin to fill in the gaps... and allow yourself a good cheat day once a week! Try not to eats carbs without a good dose of protein. . Ex... for breakfast I eat oatmeal and a small side of lean turkey sausage... sounds gross but it's fuel lol!

Being healthy is 80% what you eat and 20% exercise. It's better to eat smaller portions more often than to eat three meals a day. I meal prep chicken breast with rice and a veggie like broccoli or asparagus. Drink lots and lots of water. Don't drink cokes or sugary drinks. No juice. Keep dairy down to a minimum.

I just started working out and learning how to take better care of myself. That's what I like to call it instead of a diet. I have a good 20lbs I can lose. I really never worked out. Now I'm doing at least 30-45 mins on the treadmill of running and power walking. I track how many miles I go, and I've started my own little competition with myself to see if I can cut some time off my distance. No cheat days, no skipping workouts for me. It's just an excuse to be lazy.

As far as eating, I'm just trying to eat better foods; and watch WHEN I eat. Nothing big before 10am, and nothing after 6pm. No sugars, processed foods, fast foods, sodas, limit breads and pastas. My friend had me download this app called "My Fitness Pal". You enter in the food you eat for breakfast, lunch, dinner & snacks, log water intake & exercise. At the end of your days, it will tell you approximately how much you should weigh in *5 weeks if everyday were like that day.

When I was in better shape I just made a constant effort to eat less garbage. Cereal is my biggest weakness so I made sugary cereal a weekend only thing and ate oatmeal or eggs during the week. Meal prep was my best friend, I tried to make all my own meals. When I ate out I'd pick healthier sides and always ate all my veggies and took any leftover meat home once I was full. I'm not a believer in fad diets or even diets in general. I much prefer just to make it a permanent thing. There's still days when I run to grab fast food in a pinch, but its maybe once a week when it used to be daily. I also used to spend 2 hours at the gym, but I was going to college and had the time for that. Now I just try to do some type of activity each day, even if it's just walking around my block. Some days I don't ride and lunge my horse instead, and I walk around while lunging. I never stay in the same spot. Some days when I ride I put my stirrups up a hole or 2 and trot & post for a half hour or an hour. I like to just go trot the trails and post the whole time. Works both for my horse & myself.

I'm following the Keto Diet right now. Easiest thing I've ever done, and I've tried lotsss of them. I'm never hungry, I don't "feel" like I'm on a diet.

I had lost about 30 pounds by eating "right" and exercising 30 min a day 4-5 days a week. I still needed to lose another 10-15, but was just stuck! For about 3-4 months I just stopped seeing any progress/results. I lost 3 pounds in the first 7 days starting keto. Which isn't that much, but I don't have that much left to lose, so I was super excited!

Plus I'm still allowed to eat cheese, bacon, ranch, cream cheese, ribeyes! My faves! Lol!

It's worth checking out to see if you can do it!

I did the Keto diet, it works fast. However you have to stay low carb for after you're done because you'll gain weight x2 if you go back to eating regular carbs. I gained twice as much back within 2 weeks just by eating a "doctor prescribed" low carb diet, when I had done the keto diet for 8 weeks. Lost 25lbs and gained just under 50lbs afterwards. And it took a solid 6 months for me to be able to eat carbs and not gain weight again. That's why many people who tried the keto diets like Xyngualr, will tell you to stay far away from that unless you're prepared to go super low carb forever.

I hate working out and I am not the atheletic kind.  That being said I really enjoy Crossfit and you will see results quickly.  Especially an increase in core strength will help with riding.
As far as eating, I TRY to stay away from carbs (constant struggle), no fast
food, and no sodas.

I started working out to build strength for barrel racing, not to lose weight (I've actually gained a couple of pounds since starting to workout, pretty sure it is muscle). But we eat healthy. We don't go over the top with anything; my great grandmother, who lived to be 102, said to do everything in moderation. So, we have fruits and vegetables and meats and breads and desserts...all in moderation, not anything too much, and we are pretty healthy people. I am NOT a person who could eat only salads...I would go crazy! LOL.
But I do get in a bad habit of eating a snack after supper, like popcorn or something like that, so I try to set myself one day a week I do that (like Saturday night when a good movie is on), and another big thing (and I was REALLY bad about this) is soda pop...pop has so many sugars and calories in it, it just packs on the pounds. So, I won't say I cut it all out, but I try to drink pop no more than once a week. I'll probably come back and post more as I think of it. :

I've found that getting into a routine with eating helps. Like stay consistent with when you are going to eat.

Every morning I pack with me low fat, sugar free yogurt with frozen fruit and granola.
So when I go shopping, I know what I'm buying, leads me away from buying bagels and cream cheese.
I admit to eating a lot of meat, we get a beef custom cut every year to beef and elk or moose make up most of my protein intake, I also eat quite a bit of chicken.
I eat a lot of greens and fruit as well, try to avoid breads and stuff as much as possible. My favorite thing to eat is beef burritos LOL, can't go wrong with beef, lettuce, tomato, salsa, sour cream, and a little bit of low-fat cheese!

I maybe look at a scale once every 6 months.
I've been slacking on my gym time lately, finals are a pain, but when I was working out 5 days a week and dang near had one of those awesome "Instagram fitness model" tummies, I gained weight since the last time I stood on a scale. It must be a genetics thing but both my mother and I put on muscle in a hurry when we work out. Even if I stick to the "lower weight, more reps" thing. Ya just gotta find your "thing" and remember that everyone is different!

What I have found is.....you will go thru a few ways to eat, whether it's recipes, low carb high whatever and even exercise before you find what works for you (so don't get discouraged if you try something and it not for you, find another)

ALSO it took something to "click" in my brain to take it all serious (eating and exercising). I am NOT 20 years old anymore and I couldn't kid myself that I could eat that way.

I use the myfitnesspal app and I base what I eat on my Macro #'s, I stick to whole foods and try for an 80/20 balance (really watching sugar intake tho) I also use Arbonne protein powder & detox tea. I lane swim for exercise and I've lost 7 inches since Jan 2 ....swimming is an amazing workout and low impact. Besides riding horses and labor around the ranch that is what I've found is working for me after YEARS of trying to find something that would.

I absolutely love Couch25K workouts. There's an app called Get Running that just does it for me. I always feel huge results with it, even if I'm not eating like I should. When I eat like I'm supposed to, my energy skyrockets and I really get strong on this workout plan.

Thank you all for answering!! I have always struggled with eating salads, etc (HATE lettuce and most healthy foods like tomatoes) but I know I'm needing to expand my horizons and get on a good routine for eating (college has been rough). I also am battling a health condition so I struggle to even get out of bed sometimes and I know its not an excuse sometimes you just that little extra kick in the butt to try and get working on it. I appreciate all the ideas and I'll look into see what I can figure out to work for me! If anyone has any extra tips or tricks to add, keep them coming! I'm going to start swimming (just have to get motivated to wake up in the mornings )

Eat "creative" salads....  not just blah lettuce with tomatoes and ranch dressing... yuck.  Slice different vegetables, coat them in olive oil and put in the oven until tender.  But that on lettuce with a  piece of salmon, beef or chicken....
Avocadoes with lemon juice, salt and pepper - Yum! and good for you.
