I have a 9 yr old gelding. Have had him since he was 2 been running barrels since he was 3 1/2-4 yrs old. Well the problem is that he hasn't been ran a whole lot over the past couple of years due to work and life...... So I am working on seasoning him this year. He is fine at an arena close to home but anywhere else we go he is EXTREMELY nervous and gets so worked up. You run him and he lays down a great run in the arena but is awful outside the pen. And to add to that he can get EXTREMELY buddy sour..........My question is can you fix buddy sour horses?? Also, is there a good calming supplement that will chill him out without killing his speed?

Yes there are supplements that will help with the anxiousness. It is all finding what works for him. I like Focus by THE and maybe the calmer.
I assume he is buddy sour because he is not confident being alone. In the arena he is fine during the run becuase he knows what he needs to do, but outside he is scared and not sure of himself. Only thing ot fix that is seasoning. Maybe just hauling him and tying him up alone (not running).

Sounds to me like he just needs to be hauled more often without a buddy. If he wants to pick a random horse and designate them as a buddy, make him work hard any time he tries to go toward buddy and let him rest away from buddy. Stay consistent and he'll learn.

Give him some Ace for a while. Flame away, but it keeps them calm so they can concentrate, and learn that there's nothing there to hurt them. After a while you can wean them off of it.

I believe you are right about him being insecure. This past weekend we hauled by our self but he was stalled next to a friends horse that he knew from hauling together in the past. i will try to find something easy on him without having to use drugs and pray we can get seasoned FAST. LOL Thank you for your suggestions.
