I'm going to be going to Portland for a week for doctors visits. What are the must see things close by?

There are so many things, I'm not sure where to start.  The Rose Gardens, Multnomah Falls, Mt. Hood.  What's your travel radius?

Whenever I'm in Portland I try to make it over to the coast. It might be farther than you're hoping to go though. Mt St Helens is a neat side trip, as is Multnomah Falls. Evergreen Aviation Museum is really cool too. I guess I'm not much help on what to do IN Portland...

A lot of people visit VooDoo doughnuts. I think they do dinner cruises sometimes down on the waterfront (on the Portland Spirit). Jet boat rides on the Columbia. The Oregon Zoo. This time of year, it all depends on what the weather will allow you to do! LOL

Portland is pretty to just walk around in. Parking is a pain in the butt though. You should definitely visit VooDoo Doughnuts and like someone else said Multanomah Falls is really pretty!!

I haven't lived there for awhile but I think the coast is about an hour drive and depending on how much driving you like to do, I'd head to Central Oregon. Bend is about 3 hours from Portland and you will see some different country.

Hey ... PDX native of many years here ...

What do you like to do and when are you going?

If you like hiking and outdoors - as others have mentioned hit up the falls and Mt Hood has some neat outdoor rec stuff like skiing, hiking, and sledding where you can rent equipment fairly inexpensively.

If you enjoy art, history and neat, eclectic shops - hit up the Pearl district or the waterfront where there are some fabulous museums.

If you love food and restaurants - There are several seasonal "markets", some are more food oriented than others, and definitely check out Pod's Pit for BBQ. Try the lamb, I'm biased and love it!

If you love flowers - The Rose gardens are gorgeous year round.

The Oregon Zoo is AMAZING and they have added some new exhibits in the last year with a heavy emphasis on education.

If you like hands on science with neat interactive exhibits check out OMSI - their exhibits also rotate but the laser light show set to Pink Floyd's "The Wall" album is freakin amazing, but that part is seasonal too.

Edited to add -

If you enjoy adult beverages - Oregon, but mostly Portland, has MANY small start up breweries and there is a good tasting tour we've done a few times. Last I knew there was also a "spirits tour" that included some distilleries for Vodka and Whiskey as well.
