I am on a search for eating healthier and also preparing healthier meals for my family! I have been very interested in the Paleo way of eating for a long time but just wondering who on this board follows this life style and how has it worked for you and or your family? Any suggestions on how to get started? good books, websites, blogs out there to help me?

There is a lot of good information on Pinterest.

And the recipes are GOOD. We don't follow it strictly, but I can tell you that I feel infinitely better cutting out sugar and limiting processed carbs. I never realized how much I bloat and how crappy I felt throughout the day until we made a diet change. They have you cut out a lot of fruit and things like that, and after talking with my doctor I was told that until you get down to wanting to drop the last 5-15 lbs, that cutting out fruits, say bananas for example, isn't necessary.

I do Keto/Bulletproof!  Bulletproof is a "clean eating" version of Keto and both are cousins to Paleo. True Keto allows for more dairy and cheese.  I do eat some dairy but try to limit it.   Keto relies on higher "healthy fat" intake (like 75% of your diet) to train your body into using fat for energy.  Carbs are less than 50g/day, and most people do less than 20g.  This way of eating (I won't call it a diet) has changed my life.  I still craved sugar all the time on Paleo, but the higher fat diet I eat now has completely curbed all my cravings!  Lost 10lbs like that!!

A typical day for me is

Bfast:  Bulletproof coffee (black coffee with Tbs coconut cream/Tbs butter/cinnamon

Lunch:  Burger patty with lettuce/real mayo/pickles/broccoli

Snack:  Salted almonds/peanuts or goat cheese brie and blueberries

Dinner:  Ribeye with mushrooms/steamed broccoli.

I do about 40g total carbs a day, so my veggies are a little higher than some.

I've tried hard core Keto, and loved the way I felt.  I didn't lose much weight, but it quickly killed my sugar craving.  I did it for only about six weeks and found if I went over 20 TOTAL carbs and 5grams of sugar (natural sourced sugar), I couldn't stay in ketosis and would gain a little weight.  Keto is VERY VERY hard for me, as a lifestyle.

In the past (after kids), I've done South Beach diet.  After my second baby (a year after...), I did SBD and lost 40 pounds in 4 months.  It wasn't hard!  I felt awesome and didn't have to track squat once I learned what foods were "safe" for me.  I kept most of the weight off for 14 years, until I started ignoring the SBD foods and eating like trash.   I looked up SBD again, and was disappointed to see that it's now about selling products.  It used to be straight coaching and FREE (I did buy the book).

Anyway, I found this link that talks about the difference between Paleo and SBD.  I've never tried Paleo, but you can see why SBD is super easy to maintain as a lifestyle, even if you "have to" eat out a lot.  I'm currently transistioning from keto to SBD.  Had my first bowl of rolled oatmeal this morning! :)  I'm down 12.6 pounds since Feb 15, with a few keto hiccups where I gained a pound or two.  I've lost 3 in the week that I've been switching to SBD.

I'm starting South Beach. I looked into it and I think that's going to be the best "lifestyle " for me. I ordered a book to get started with some recipes.

I started KETO on jan 9th, and lost 25lbs since then. Feel a heck of a lot better, have more energy and my back and knees hurt less.
I do stay below 20g net carbs, and do not do any flour, wheat, sugar. So no starches at all. I eat a lot of meat, and some cheese. some recipes call for half and half or heavy whipping cream, but that is all the dairy I get. I do eat a lot more eggs now, but we have chickens of our own, so they are farm fresh.
Keto is a tad different from paleo, since we don't eat fruits (not untill you are in maintenance, then you can add some), but other than that I think there is not a lot of difference. Both way of eating stay away from processed food.
Not a fan of vegetables, but you can eat some of them. Honestly, this is the first time I am losing weight and I am not feeling like I am on a diet. Yes I am restricted in what I eat, but it is very easy to follow.
And this coming from someone that was addicted to pasta and bread and sweet tea. I have not have a craving for it yet. But there are some substitutes you can find on pinterest for that if you want.
My husband is laughing his butt off, I hate cooking and since I started this way of eating I have spent more time in the kitchen than in the last 7 years of our marriage....

I agree!  So easy to follow and I don't feel restricted!  And I actually have willpower around carbs and sugar now!!  I will say, to OP, if you want to follow keto, make sure you keep sea salt or pink himalyan salt on hand, and take magnesium and a probiotic.   Helps a ton!  You lose a lot of electrolytes at first!

I loved it when I was on a strict Paleo and the weight loss and energy gain was great but my bladder couldn't handle it. It was so nice to not to ever feel hungry.

I know try to stay as close to the Paleo as I can but I do have problems eating multiple meals. We have cut out fried foods, white potatoes, breads, pasta and sugar.

I would love to follow Paleo or Keto... Problem - I HATE coconuts.  I try to stay away from sugars and that sort of thing.  I just can't pull off Coconut oil (smells fantastic, tastes TERRIBLE)

I have yet to use coconut oil. You don't have to use it. Most cooking I do is on the george foreman, or in the ai fryer so I hardly use any oil at all.

I actually found out I was sensitive to coconut oil.  Long story short, keto can really jack with your hormones as your body adapts to changing the way its processing food.  Suddenly my allergies were TENFOLD- I was miserable.  Long story short I quit putting coconut oil in my coffee and using it on my skin- BOOM.  Clear sinus'

Also went to food allergy specialist and fortunately I have no real food allergies.   Just makes me feel crappy and my skin itches when I use cocnut oil.

Long story short, I use Kerrygold butter and ghee, along with Bulletproof products.

Oh I understand this can mess with yout hormones. Looking back at what crap I put in my body over the last several decades I am surprised my body didn't act up worse. I was diagnosed with IBS years ago, and I have not had 1 flair up since I started keto. So hopefully it stays away!
I love Kerrygold butter, and have been using that the last couple of months. Tastes so much better than the fake stuff.

Glad to hear you are feeling better, eventhough you might not have a full blown allergy they can still make your life miserable.

I'm not strictly keto, but I try to do low carb/keto as much as possible. I definitely feel a lot better doing so! I do eat fruits and low carb/high protein PB so that's where I get most of my sugars. I feel a lot more satisfied and don't crave sweets/bread/pasta as much as I used to either! My mom/step father and my dad/step mom are eating low carb/keto as well and they are losing weight and it's really working for them!
I eat fruit, veggies, tuna, salad, sour cream/ranch dressing packets for dip, coconut creamer, meat, cheese at some times, eggs, hummus, salsa, etc etc. I do have Ezekiel bread on occasion, and I do cheat and go through phases where I get off track and I feel so bloated and like crap. Last night I snacked on buttermints and my stomach was painful to the touch and I looked like I was 3 months pregnant!!! You'll most likely feel so much better once you change, you won't want to go back

I tired going low carb/keto for about a month. My body hated it. I was doing everything I was suppose to, using keto sticks and maintaining it. For about the first 10-15 days I felt pretty good, did see good weight loss etc. for the last 2 weeks I had zero energy and I was a cranky b*.

Ended up going back to just good clean eating. I've maintained all the weight I lost while I was on it, which I'm happy with since I haven't been trying to lose any additional at the moment. My carbs come mostly from whole grains and a little fruit. I eat lean protein and a big salad for lunch.

I'm happier. I think my fiancé was starting to have second thoughts those last 2 weeks...

I know a lot of people who like it. I'm not the only one I know who didn't tolerate it well. I think dietary experimentation is great because different things work better or different people. Just don't beat yourself up if one doesn't work.

I do Bp coffee in the morning and then eat about 2pm and 6pm- BF likes his dinner and I usually can't say no to eating than either!   I do HIIT and strength training 45 min max 4 times a week and feel good!    When I wasn't getting enough salt/electrolytes I felt weak and drained.

I'm not a big fan of doing the bulletproof coffee thing/fast EVERY day. (I'm not sure if you meant you werent going to do the coffee and just fast) but for 400 calories in that the coffee has there are a lot more nutritous things you can put in your body.

That being said, I am a big fan of intermittent fasting and calorie cycling if your goal is weight loss. I think its best to keep your body on its toes to keep your metabolism from lowering and from stalling.

I am active and probably need 2200 to maintain, but I am in fat loss mode right now so my calories are a little lower. I usually walk a bit in the morning while I'm in fast mode, and do my cardio/weights fed otherwise I feel too weak.

I use my version of bulletproof coffe for breakfast on fast days (monday and wed, 1500 cal), but I only do 1 tbsp of coconut oil, and 1/2 tbsp butter, its still low cal if I want it on regular days with a small breakfast. I like the benefits of coconut oil and coffee in moderation. I feel like the coffee helps a lot with appetite control on these days. I do some light cardio, or just work outside this day after lunch. (I do sometimes feel a bit weak before lunch (my metabolism is really high).

On regular days (1700 cal) I prefer to alternate eggs and vegan proteins shake with coconut milk & yogurt, hemp and pea protein and some antioxident fruit breakfast is around 3-400 calories. I do light cardio and work outside, and lift some weights.

Then I do 1 refeed or load day sunday (2300 cal) where I eat only meats, veggies and salad, and save my carbs for some good deserts as a reward. (usually we go to a buffet after church) I just really love food and can't stick with a diet that doesnt let me have cake somewhat often. I work out a little more this day. Lift heavier weights after I have eaten.

I have lost about 20lb, got to about 17% body fat doing this and its way more sustainable than trying a  steady, stricter diet. I can never stick to those long term. I dont obsess too much over what I eat, I set my macros at 30% carb, 20% protein and 50% fat (healthy ones) and I found I just naturally eat pretty close to this, any less carbs and I feel pretty lethargic.

I use the Myfitnesspal app so it's so easy to meal plan and stick to it. I usually just put in the night before what I am going to eat the next day so I dont have to think too much about it later, and if I get super hungry or tired I might add something else. Sometimes I meal plan dinners for the whole week in there so I know what to have on hand.

For the OP I found paleo too restricting and hard for my kids, (and I couldnt stick to it) so we still do some paleo recipes but mostly just stick with good old fashion real foods, I cut way back on processed grains & sugars, and my kids eat smaller portions of brown rice, and oatmeal, oat flour pancakes, sweet potato now for carbs, lots of eggs, meat, some cottage cheese, fruit, veggies. healthy fats, coconut yogurt. We sweeten with agave or stevia. Pinterest is great for dinner ideas. I have learned to only save easy, less ingredient foods that I will actually make, otherwise it gets too cluttered.
