I really like a Jim warner cause you can get some rate and set, but also keep that bend!

The Ugly hack and the Jim Warner...short shanked. I also had good luck with the Steivers combo hack with the chain mouth piece. Depends on the horse for me.

Thank you all for your input. This horse has a little bit ( according to the vet ) of TMJ going on and his first barrel is hit or miss. You can NOT touch him running to the first or he just shakes his head and goes by. If we don't touch him at all, he'll wrap it 80% of the time. So figured maybe he would like a hackamore better to eleviate the pressure on his mouth with the slight TMJ. So we just ordered both the Bozo and Jim Warner short shank rope nose. We'll see how it goes or which one he likes better. If any. lol

I would be getting his TMJ problem fixed.

My Bozo hack fell apart the first run I made in it.  Scary when your hack falls apart on the first barrel . .

I use Stivers and JW, I'll use both on the same horse and see which one the horse works best in.

Beetle hack. The one I have has a smaller space between the two shanks on it. The one I have has no makers mark but my mare loves it.

 Clampitt hack

The Clampitt hack looks interesting to me. What type of horses work well in it, and what makes a person decide to take the bit out of their mouth? I'm not a hack person, so any information is useful.

First use was on an ex race horse. She was way calmer than with any bit. I've ridden several in it.

Thanks. I'm thinking about one for an ex-racehorse as well, and possibly for an older gelding just to give his mouth a break. Still have plenty of whoa if you need it?

My hands seem better in a hack so I've used many of them but by far the Clampitt is the best. Ronny will visit with you about you and your horse than make one to suit. Then the help doesn't stop there. As you use it, ride, run, etc. he will help you with it. LOVE his hack :)

I've always seen how the Clampitt is worn so low on the nose, like they could restrict their breathing.  I thought they should be higher.  Are these supposed to be that low?

Get a good equine dentist... TMJ pain isn't normal and usually TMJ issues are caused by an unbalanced mouth... just my 2 cents, but getting a good equine dentist will might fix your issues. If not, have an ultra sound done on the TMJ, maybe inject?

Yes, we are addressing his teeth. Havnt done anything about injecting yet though. Diligent teeth work seems to be working well. Just though a hack might solidify his first better without just hoping this run isnt the run he decides to float by. I have been told the JOH horses seem to be funny with their mouths so just thought it would be worth a try.
