I gave my mare a shot of Pentosan in the back of her hind leg last Tues and it made her so sore she was lame on that leg for three days.  I'm supposed to give her another one this Tuesday but I don't want to do that to her again.   I chose her hind leg instead of her neck because I didn't want her to get sore there, but I think I would rather have that than have her so lame.  Do you think I should devide it into two shots and give one on each side?  Any suggestions??

I always give shots in the pec muscle. Never had an issue and if for some reason they have a reaction, they can still put their head down to eat or drink. I just rotate between the 2 sides if I have to give a shot more than once. Vet told me to do it and I have had really good luck with it so far.

Just curious , where did you get your pentosan from ??? Your vet here in the USA or did you use the horse pre race stuff??? Most pentosan is now labeled IV. But some have had issues with the horse pre race. I never have so I'm curious. Thanks

Yes me either. That's why I asked the OP. Some say they have had problems with the horse pre race. I have never had a problem either.

I have had several issues with the Horseprerace pentosan, had two horses get very sore from an IM shot.  The Pentosan Platinum has been fine, no problems at all.  I also got some compounded pentosan from a local vet and had two horses break out in fairly severe hives from it, had to give dex to both horses to get them comfortable.  If I use Pentosan again, it will be the Platinum, otherwise I will just go with Adequan or Legend.

It is from Horse Pre race but it is actually Pentosan Gold.  I bought it a couple of years ago but it is not expired.  I know I gave a couple of shots a few years ago when I bought it and never had a reaction, but I don't remember where I gave it.  This bottle is labeled IM.  I don't know what to do about her next shot.  I don't want her sore like she was.

I'm not currently using it, but that is the kind I always bought and from the same place. Never an issue.

I would be asking my vet about where to give this shot and maybe let him/her do it since your really worry about the soreness.

Can you describe your routine for IM injection?

My dog got sore once, and one of my horses got sore once, both times from hind leg shots. I gave shots out of the same bottle before and after without an issue. My suspicion is that I got into the wrong spot and pinged some connective tissue in the dog, and the horse I gave it close to an old kick scar that had been a hematoma, so I'm going to guess the scar tissue didn't appreciate being messed with.  I started giving it IV after that because they do act like it stings going in the muscle and no problems.

There is a major nerve that goes down the back leg, you may have aggravated that causing the pain or lameness.

My routine is to just decide where I'm going to inject the shot. This shot, I decided on her left hind leg, because it's her right hind leg she is sore in. I just petted her and then slapped her a few time and stuck the needle in, made sure no blood came out, attached the syringe and administered the liquid. I didn't inject it slow, like someone else suggested, after I had given it. Maybe that would have helped. She did act like it stung a bit as it went in.

I usually give vaccines in the neck. I'm pretty sure I'm going to do this shot in her neck next time.

Not that this has anything to do with this particular incident, but I think your description is probably what most horse owners do.
I shudder when I see how some people give IM injections, including a lot of vets. No alcohol or surgical soap. Just brush the dirt off and jam it in. Then they wonder why this drug or that drug causes abscesses so frequently. I realize that's probably not what happened here......just wanted to make a point. I assume she isn't lame now.

What protocol do you recommend? my vet told me that using alcohol was just to make owners feel better. All it did, according to him, was cue the horse that the shot is coming and make it difficult to give shots to them in the long run. For the alcohol to be effective you would have to wait awhile (I can't remember how lucky my) and then because we are outdoors and you don't shave the injection site, it won't be very effective. This doesn't set well me, though. I do worry about this and would really like to know what you think.

I don't think a person needs to go through a big protocol or procedure to significantly lower the risk for an abscess following an IM injection. It's not necessary to shave the hair beforehand. You don't have to scrub anything either. What I do is stick my finger in some surgical soap (hibiclens, chloroprep, betadine, etc...)and rub it around a 2" circle where I want to give the shot (in the neck). After that I let it sit for say a minute or two while I'm drawing up the vaccine or whatever it is you want to give. You can see where you've rubbed the soap on, whereas with alcohol it evaporates quickly. What's important is that the surface of the skin and hair is exposed to the soap (or alcohol). The idea is that this kills the surface bacteria and reduces the chances of dragging bacteria along the needle as it passes through the skin.
Basically, keep it simple. Make sure your site is painted with whatever you choose, and give your shot there. I always poke at the skin with my finger for a few seconds just to get rid of that wild-eyed anticipation, and usually it's no big deal.

Giving a shot without some sort of prep is lazy and sloppy. I think this is the cause of a lot of abscesses people talk about following IM injections. And for Gods sake, don't re-use needles and syringes. Spend an extra quarter and do it right.

I would be a little concerned about using a 2 year old bottle, especially if it had previously had doses taken out of it.

I usually give my pentosan injections in the butt, I push the meds very slowly and try to exercise them after. Get the muscles warmed up and the blood flowing.

I have never had issue but I have heard of some horses losing a patch of hair near the site of pentosan. Couple years ago they changed the labeling to IV. I would just give it IV.

It's just plain laziness that a vet doesn't take a few seconds to prep any injection site. There's no excuse, really, other than laziness and the fact that many clients don't realize that it's terrible technique.
If vets don't prep an injection site, then that sends a signal to lay people that they don't have to either. Imagine if people went out and rolled in poop off and on all day, and a doctor gave them an injection without any skin prep.

Thank you for your opinion and input.  I had a vet tell me once that his belief was with a wet injection site there was more chance of dragging bacteria on the needle into the skin.  So I've always gone with that. (You know about opinions, everyone has one)   And no, she is not lame anymore.

FLITASTIC - 2017-04-10 7:19 AM I have never had issue but I have heard of some horses losing a patch of hair near the site of pentosan. Couple years ago they changed the labeling to IV. I would just give it IV.

Thank you for your opinion.  I think IV is the best solution.

Hot Rod - 2017-04-08 5:34 PM I gave my mare a shot of Pentosan in the back of her hind leg last Tues and it made her so sore she was lame on that leg for three days.
Can you describe your routine for IM injection?

It's a creative alibi, but it's not true. As my high school football coach used to shout at me, "Just what the hell is wrong with doing it right, Harris!"

FLITASTIC - 2017-04-08 5:04 PM Just curious , where did you get your pentosan from ??? Your vet here in the USA or did you use the horse pre race stuff??? Most pentosan is now labeled IV. But some have had issues with the horse pre race. I never have so I'm curious. Thanks

I wouldn't use that anymore if I was you. I could be wrong but I thought compounded drugs were legally only supposed to have 6month expiration dates. I don't think that site sells things that are inspected by the FDA but I could be wrong. If you get prescription drugs without a prescription, how do you know what you're actually getting?

The compounding pharmacy I work for is FDA registered and they make Pentosan, let me know if I can help in any way. I don't make any $ from referrals, I just want to help when I can.

Could you PM your pharmecy's info, please. I am going to ask my vet if she can write a prescription for me. Thank you
