I have a gelding who is not turning his first barrel. It's only going to the right. I have tried chrio, teeth, change of saddle and saddle pad. He will lope beautifully going to the right but when asked to turn the first barrel he does not turn. I ride him in working cow horse bit and have used same one for years. Any thoughts on what it could be? I am taking him to vet this week for lameness exams. I have attached video. And he is on wrong lead going in but even if he is on correct lead he does it. https://youtu.be/jy_Ojha7Ni0

Eliminate pain, hocks could be sore?? Or even higher. Once you elminate that, go back to your foundation work, I'd suggest riding with a good trainer who has a good eye and can help your horse learn to stand up and engage his hip... horses who don't want to set for a barrel and drive with their hip (if sound) have holes in their foundaiton and maybe need to take a step back and fix it. The first thing I noticed is that the horse is not correct lead. That tells you there is a problem. It could be anything from head to tail. Last time the horse's teeth were done? Age of horse? I have my 4 and 5 year olds done three times a year. Cinchy 4 year old just went to chiro. That eliminated the problem. Lots of factors here. Do you have not guards on the bit? Could be as simple as the bit pinching him.

His teeth were done in august and by an actual dentist. He has been chrio within past 6 months. He is 11. There Is no guard on bit but could try. I spend a lot of time on slow work and he does it beautifully.

You need to take him to the vet. I see by your profile picture that you are in the San Antonio area. I recommend Dr Martin or Dr Huffman at Retama.
Also, John Mohar, the photographer that took your profile picture, is a personal friend of mine. Please replace your profile picture with one that isn't watermarked that you have actually purchased. Thanks!

My horse did this last summer. Beginning of summer he turned great then about mid July he quit turning to the right in barrels. He would lope right handed circles but not turn when he ran. Took him to an Amish chiropractor and he was out in the sternum. After he adjusted him he turned just like he had in the beginning of summer. Late in the fall he did this again so took him back and he was out again. This spring he checked him and he was fine. Hoping to start out this year great. Hope this helps.
