Im fairly certain I have mold on my (popcorn) ceiling in a couple of spots. My husband seems to think we can just kilts it, that isnt good enough for me. I think I am going to call in the experts but in the mean time wanted to check here and see if you guys can give me some tips. What will need to be done if you have experienced this before?
You need to fix the problem that is creating the mold ..
typical is a leak in your roof wetting your insulation and
ceiling to grow the mold ... or .. not enough circulation
of fresh air in your attic to get rid of high humidity creating
the mold.
Replace what is moldy .. insulation and ceiling panels and
strip the popcorn off and have a smooth ceiling ...
If you call in the experts ... they may go crazy and condemn
your entire house ... so do some research in order to make
a careful decision on this ..
I agree you got to find the cause of the mold, find where the moisture is coming from befor you do any work. If the AC ducking is running threw the ceiling check that too, could be moisture bulding up somewhere.
If you just patch the problem the problem will grow. My cousin did this with her house. A few months later their house was so over run with mold it was leveled to the ground. Luckily for them, they called an "expert" before they did any repairs who had insurance and he was the one who suggested just removing certain parts of the wall to "fix" the problem. Clearly he didn't fix anything and didn't bother to tell them the mold was attached to every piece of beam inside the wall.... Long story short, his business insurance bought them a new house.....
Thanks guys. A couple of years ago we had a storm come through that caused a roof leak. We fixed the leak but from the looks of it the insulation got wet, causing the mold. I think this is pretty serious and want to replace the ceiling pannels/insulation. Will we need to spray bleach or anything on molded materials/beams?
You will need to spray the studs for the mold once you get all of the drywall and insulation removed. There are a bunch of products for that you can buy at any home improvement store. People I know down here are using Jomax or Zinsser. Lots of people down here gutted down to the studs from a recent flood.

We had spots on our bathroom ceiling but it was mildew as we didn't have a "fart" fan and all the steam from the shower caused it. We sprayed the ceiling with a bleach/water mix and used Kilz - AFTER we had a exhaust fan put in. That did the trick for us.
