Location: California | For those that have followed my mare's lameness issues and my back issues I have an awesome update!
Today there was a local memorial barrel race today and I took the horses to have some fun. We had a blast! Ace was pretty full of himself but did well in exhibitions, unfortunately no videos. Serenity has remained sound for a while now so I FINALLY trusted her to just warm up and run and focused on staying out of her way. Unfortunately I forgot to push her. Lol. The result was a slow but beautiful run! Not perfect but way nicer then we had been doing! The icing on the cake is I'm not in agony after my very long and eventful day! That is HUGE progress with my back issues!

Location: California | With awesome progress comes awesome set backs. Even though Serenity didn't give any indication on Saturday of being sore or off at all and felt absolutely AMAZING, she was very sore Sunday. She was given Bute Sunday and Monday. Tuesday she was just slightly off but had some heat around both fetlock joints. X-rays revealed navicular changes to the front left foot, coffin bone changes to the front right, and a bone spur forming on her left stifle. The right stifle also flexed sore but no where near as bad as the left. Vet advised 3in wedge pads on both fronts and then reevaluate in 3 weeks. Then injections in the coffin joint and stifles at that time if needed, will most likely be needed. So what seemed like awesome progress was just my mare loving her job and trying her heart out. |

I just keep beating myself up over it. How could I not have known something was wrong??? But seriously, does she look sore at all in the video of that run? She sure didn't feel like it! :-( |

Don't feel bad--maybe this is what it took to get her looked at again and figure out what's going on at this point in time. She loves you and you love her. No grudges held

Location: Running my kids somewhere. |   If you were able to finish the day without issues for you or your horse what does it matter if you were slower than before. You can say you did it and you both will be able to do it again tomorrow.

Thank you! That was actually my exact view on it and I was beyond thrilled! Honestly that is the first time I FINALLY stayed out of my mare's way and let her work, minus my lack of setting her up properly for 1st barrel. Lol. Then Sunday morning I realized how sore she was :-( I just can't believe how awesome she felt and looked Saturday and then how lame she was Sunday! I've owned this mare for 9 years now and have done all her training (with some outside guidance when needed) and I can usually tell when she's off, there were absolutely NO signs Saturday. The amount of try and heart in this mare continues to astound me.
Hopefully now that I have some REAL answers as to why she keeps coming up lame we can now finally get a handle on it and help her! |

I think these are the very first pics of me smiling honestly! I had a blast! My last run on this mare I was in completely agony with my back. It showed in our horrible run and in the pics. Usually I have a weird look on my face. Lol

Thank you! You're right. This is what it took to get her back to the vet. I thought she was fine out in the pasture. This mare has given her all to me every single time I have asked, now it's my turn to do everything I can for her. Now that I finally have some real answers we have a plan! The vet is hopeful that we caught everything soon enough that we can stop the progression in her feet or at least slow it down. I'm really worried about the left stifle. She was protesting flexing it at all and I was pretty positive she was going to lay into the vet for insisting she hold it there. She about fell over when he released that leg and she went trotting off she was just that lame on it! Their grit is a blessing and a curse.
Ace's front feet grow just like hers so he has an appointment to get a lameness exam as a precautionary step and to get x-rays of his feet so we make sure he is being shod properly, which I don't think he is. He'll probably need a wedge while we fix his feet as well. He has no I'd i cations of being off or lame but I want to prevent as much as possible! |

He said the injections can take up to 2 weeks to reach full effect but we won't know if they helped if I don't use her. So I'll probably just start lightly riding her and progress from there. IF she is moving good and staying sound by the 28th I may take her to the playday but that will take some serious thought first. Vet wants me to run her by then so we can see how she is after but my over protective side screams no. She is moving much better on the Gamechanger and the new x-rays show a major improvement in her angles so that should help immensely with her front feet.
This huge part of me prays she can continue on barrels. The overprotective side of me says to retire her. This mare LOVES to go and run though. Time will tell our fate. |

My mare was like that. She would carry me on hours long trail rides and never say "no" or act tacky. Looking back now, I know she was hurting. So I understand. And know you will know the right thing to do! |
