My mare has developed a new allergy in the last year. Last fall she rubbed most of her mane and tail head while I was gone to several work conferences. It stopped over fall and winter and yesterday I went out to feed and ride her and noticed she had been sticking her head through the fence and rubbing and she was also backing up to something and rubbing her tail. She also has bumps on the top of her neck by her withers.
She is up to date on worming, has had a powerpak recently. She is on 2.5cc of progesterone every two weeks to help her heat cycles.
Till I figure out what to do I have a portable electric fence I take to races and she is in there instead of able to run around her 3 acre pasture. I know she has to be miserable.
I don't know what to do!!!!!

Ask your veterinarian about Voren (Dex Isonicotinate)- it is a longer acting dexamethasone that can give relief from itching for about 4 weeks. I keep my mare with skin allergies on this as well as Platinum Skin and Allergy through the spring and summer months.

For my gelding with allergies I also have to keep him 24/7 in a fly sheet once the weather warms up (full neck) as the heat of the sun makes any hives even worse. He loves it when Fall gets here and he can be naked for awhile until the snow flies. Drugs did nothing for him. Cold baths, fly spray (only certain kinds or he breaks out) and a fly sheet.
