| So I've got this pad from oxbow tack http://oxbowtack.com/product/felt-roper-pad/
I am really impressed with it in general, but I feel like the wear leather in front of the withers puts too much pressure on the nuchal ligament for my taste. Has anyone cut theirs out, or done a similar modification? I don't want the stress point on the pad to move to the first vent hole, you know?
Replacing it entirely might be in the cards, but I'd prefer to stay ~$100, so five stars and the like are out. I prefer natural materials. Pony doesn't have any weird conformation issues.
Thanks! |

Location: Heart of Texas | I would not do it. I tried it once and it did exactly what you said you don't want it to do. Just cut your loses, sell it and buy another. |

That one would not fit one of my horses, for sure. That is great that you are aware of the possibilty. I have never cut that leather front piece - usually I just sell the entire pad and get something different, but I really don't care for felt cutout pads at all - and I've had several quality brands.
I have stumble across an article but cannot find it where it addressed most cutout pads not being cut far enough back to do any good, anyway.
I have cut more than one straight pad, though.
I love countoured Thinline pads - they are my favorite pad.
I have never heard of a heavier rider needing more padding. Have you ever read any science about the felt pad compression - there isn't much shock absorption there. |

Location: Dubach, LA | I always cut the leather across the withers. Works for me. I've never had a problem with the pad moving. Of course, I ride dropped rigging Coats, so that may have something to do with it. |
