Looking for other experiences or ideas... I have a mare who will be super chill and relaxed most days and then all of the sudden will have a day where she is a nervous wreck. Paces at the hitching rail and gets so worked up that she will vibrate uncontrollably. She does it at home even tied up next to her buddies. Sometimes she will do it at a jackpot. Any ideas? Vet check showed nothing, she is on minimal grain. I feel like something is causing this but not sure where to start looking.

Hang a hay net with alfalfa? My mare can be hot, and chewing distracts and calms her. She's also on Magnesium, about 3 tablespoons am and pm. She tends to get spun up if she's had a couple days off in a row. She does much better in regular work.

Try magnesium, and do a hair analysis.   I have a mare that I just got that was nervous wreck all the time- last night was the best ride we've have on 3 days of magnesium.  I got Quiessence from Valley Vet.

Also- she stays outside.  Does sooo much better than in a stall.

Extreme ulcers. Feed free choice alfalfa.Forco to get the gut right and omeprezole. If on pasture look for toxic weeds

I just started her on Quiessense today... hoping it will help.

We scoped her and she was clean but I am worried that she will give herself ulcers the way she gets.

Awesome!  Keep us posted!  I just ordered more for our cutters too!  Last night was the best ride ever- we actually went out in the pasture and loped circles with horses running/cows everywhere.   Definitely is the magnesium!

As the others said, Magnesium can make a difference. Got to be careful on the dosing though. A while back I read an article that connected more eventing falls to the increased use of magnesium prior to competing. It can impact reaction ability and the nervous system and from what the article said there's not a lot of guidelines on dosage limits.

This is good to know-  I know I normally take 250mg...the other night I thought "well heck I'll take 2"...my heart was racing and I couldn't sleep all night.  So there sure is a fine line!

I don't think you have to worry if you are giving the recommended dose in thier feed.  The eventers and hunters are most likely using high doses of the injectable magnesium.

Yes, be careful. I take magnesium too and I was going to increase it to see if it would help with some leg cramps I've been getting and luckily I read that it can be toxic if you take too much.

My mare is similar to yours. I am looking into ulcers and heat. Do you know if your mare was in heat when she was doing this?

Shocking that toxicity of some minerals is not that well known and discussed by health professionals!

This mare doesn't really show strong heat signs so I'm not sure.  Could be ulcers, and I'm treating for that too.   I'm of the opinion that so many horses have ulcers and EPM nowadays that I just treat new horses for 30 days for both.
