We just recently got a male blue heeler puppy and he is now 5 months old.  This is my husbands 2nd heeler and my 1st dog ever but have always been around the breed.  I have no intentions of using this dog for breeding but my husband refuses to let me have him neutered.  He says every male heeler he has known that is neautered gets fat and lazy.  We both work full time so right now he is crated during the day and outside in the evenings in the barn.  We plan on getting his an outside kennel as well for during the day.  What can I expect from an un-neautered heeler.  Will he constantly wnat to run looking for females?  Will he lift his leg and pee all over my house?  These are my big concerns.

The dog will get fat and lazy and mega crazy if crated or kenneled all day. This breed needs needs needs to be worked out excersised hard daily. If not they literally will basically go nuts on you. You'll have behavior issues, potty issues, training, everything.

Yes most likely he'll pee since he's crated and maybe not learning to not pee in house.
Neutering will not make him fat and lazy. I have two, both dogs fixed and my male is far from lazy.

My mini Aussie is neutered and is far from lazy. It makes them more attached to you because there is no desire to check out the girls

Ours is a red but we had him neutered five or so years ago and he's extremely active.  He's gotten a little fat but I attribute that to advancing age (and leftovers).

My mom's un-altered male actually ended up having health problems because he hadn't been cut. (blood in his urine, constant dripping, etc.) She had him fixed and all his urinary problems disappeared. Along with $500 to get him neutered.... He's definitely plumped up since then, BUT he's also getting old so he just physically can't be as active as he once was.

I know of one that was always hyper and thin even when cut and one that was lazy and useless. These dogs tend to be hyper so a good breeder can give you a really good idea of how they may be once cut.

I am on my second one (both female and fixed). I had the 1st one 13 years. For the first 9 years, she stayed outside and had the run of the place. We moved to another place (even bigger) and all she wanted to do was stay inside, go out and potty and come back in. After she passed away at 15, I got another one who was 2. She has NEVER wanted to be outside. When I am out, she is out with me and can run faster than any dog I have ever seen! Once I go in, she comes in to and lounges around and is never hyper or crazy!

Intact dogs either male or female have health problems later in life. I had a non breeding male that ended up with testicular cancer, a non breeding female that ended up with breast cancer and had all her mammary glands removed on one side. I have had both intact and sterilized males and females and the activity level is in the dog's personality not due to the fact that they are sterilized or intact.

They are a active dog and need a job so hope that you get him a outside kennel with a run soon .Get him neutered, that would be the best thing for him..

Mine didn't slow down at all after being neutered. He'd still be chasing birds after keeping up with me WORKING 4 horses out in the pasture. I swear that dog ran at least 15 miles a day.

I agree, it's a man thing. I always fix my dogs due to potential health issues in the future.

Thank you everyone for your feedback.  I am working on my husband and putting forth all efforts to convince him to let me get him neutered.  I told him I made this post and gave him all your feedback.  I also told him that out of respect for all of our neighbors who have dogs this is in everyones best interest.

He needs neutered. He will be a happier dog. Neutering has not calmed my daughters heeler down. He's still just as active as before. Guys are downright goofy when it comes to testicals. All dogs eventually get fat and lazy as they age and it doesn't matter if they are neutered or not. It's called aging.

Are they ever too old to neuter? Probably a dumb question. I've always altered my females but not my boys.

Sorry I just have to say this....it's a man thing!!!!!!!!!!  Your dog needs to be neutered.  I had a heeler that was neutered he was neither lazy or fat.

I find it ironic that guys are so goofy about removing the testicals of dogs. Women on the other hand don't give it a second thought when it comes to removing the ovaries on female dogs. Guys will actually wiggle and cross their legs at the thought. Bunch of sissies, lol!

Had a male Heeler giving to me when he was around 3 years old, got him neutered and had him till the day he passed away from old age and he was going on 18 years old, never got fat or lazy, he was a coyote fighting son of a gun.
Now if your going to keep your Heeler penned up all the time I can see where it would get fat and lazy.

Luca is about to turn 7, and I sure want him here as long as possible!!! So gonna be talking to our vet soon. All of my males (unaltered) have usually lived to be around 14 or so.

Please fix him! Besides the fact that there are generally more health problems when they are intact, there are way too many unwanted puppies out there from dogs that were not fixed. He may be the best dog in the world, but if there is a female in heat near by he will likely run if he is not fixed. I have been around heelers my whole life and never had them get fat and lazy from fixing. They tends to come with old age.
