Member Posts: 49 Location: Aggieland	I am moving to a place where I will no longer have access to good alfalfa, so I'm going to have to result in feeding cubes. How many pounds of alfalfa cubes should I feed to equal two flakes of alfalfa? Also what is a good brand to feed? Thanks!

I just read the headlines Posts: 4483	I feed mine 5 lbs in the summer, 8 in the winter, but I am in South Texas. The high humidity and heat plus the tendency of one of my horses to sweat more when on a higher alfalfa diet is why I feed lower amounts.

Expert Posts: 2097 Location: Deep South	I think you should just weigh the flakes you're feeding now. On average, my flakes weigh 5lbs each from the alfalfa bales I've been buying. I feed 2 flakes am and pm, so I would need to feed 20lbs of cubes per day. Which brand you should feed depends on where you're moving and what you'll have access to once you get there.

I Sell Dreams Posts: 1654 Location: Freestone TX	I feed my short & stocky BJO 14 pounds a day and he is sloppy fat. I feed my giant ASOF the same 14 pounds a day and she is just right. I got my ration from Jim in Weatherford. I should cut back the BJO but I feel sorry for him not having enough volume to eat. I give each 1 flake of tifton a day just to keep their stomachs off empty.

Veteran Posts: 155	I've fed cubes for years and it really depends upon the rest of their diet. I have some that get 3lbs 2x a day and others that get more. I would weigh the amount of alfalfa you feed now and feed cubes comparable. Then you can adjust as necessary.
