So my horse has EMS. I know low starch feed, looked into Purina Wellsolve L/S & a minimum of 30 mins long trotting or more every day. I'm fine with that. Anyone else have a horse with EMS? What do you feed? I know Renew Gold is also low starch and everybody seems to love it, the Wellsolve is pricier as well and won't last as long as the RG but I don't know what I'd feed with it... alfalfa pellets? I just found out this morning so I'm researching more today.
I suspect that my mare has it so I just ordered a bag of Curost Meta-support and a grazing muzzle. Please pray for me when I try that muzzle out, she is gonna be ticked lol!
I have a 13 year old thoroughbred with EMS and cushings. She was having unexplainable laminitis in one front foot. She kept bruising and abscessing. FInally we took her in for x rays and she had a slight amount of rotation. After a summer of trying to manage and correct it we decided to do a MRI. We thought at first it was mechanical founder because she stomped and pawed a lot. She was also not to over weight. Well at the MRI appointment they checked her for insulin resistance and cushings just in case. It came back she is positive for both EMS (insulin resistance) and cushings. She is on pergolide for the cushings and a supplement for EMS with chromium and magnesium. But most importantly a low startch/ sugar diet. So far she is doing great. The rehab on her feet has been going good and her insulin has leveled out. From what I've read you should be able to feed alfalfa pellets just fine. The NSC is actually lower then grass hay or pellets.
