I have a 3yr old filly who is flighty/spooky by nature. She's never been in a wreck, but blows up if tied in a trailer - stock or slant. She will load right back up, but the second you tie her in, she tries to run backwards and obviously then gets in a storm, often ending with her back legs under the trailer as she wont quit fighting or pulling. This has happened 3 times in 2 different trailers over the course of probably 2 years. As soon as we've cut the lead rope, she drops her head and will take a step back up into the trailer, so I dont think it's pain related or her not wanting to work, but more along the lines of getting scared. I am considering trying a PHT or BOT poll pack to help keep her calm, but am not sure which would be the most beneficial. Your thoughts? Any other ideas?? TIA :)

My thoughts would be don't tie her in the trailer. I don't tie mine. You might also want to take it to a trailer place and have it checked for shorts. I had a friend whose horse would do that and come to find out, it was shocking him.

Ever since the first incident, I quit tying her in. Someone else was hauling her yesterday and forgot that you couldnt tie this horse in as he was the others. Human error - it happens. And to be honest, I am of the mindset I would rather get her over these fits than use a gimmick to get by - but I know that's easier said than done and not always possible.
We have a mare that will, for no apparent reason, set back violently when tied. I tried the poll pack with no appreciable results. Then I tried the BOT cap and she did visibly relax. I just run the lead rope thru the slats a couple of times, have a hay bag in front of her with the cap on and she hasn't pulled back, BUT when we haul her, I keep her in the trailer if we aren't going to be around. Since it was always a random fit she threw, I just don't trust it won't happen again away from home.
