It is a backward sliding gag. Hotcat on here is Kathy James and can tell you more about them. They work very well with a lot of peoples hands. I have one in like every mouth piece literally 8 of them and some I have double of with different curbs. I also like the shorter shanked version of this bit as well.

I got one 2 weeks ago because the trainer I sent my horse to uses it alot. My horse responds to it well and it seems to work. I'm not a bit person so I can't explain the functionality of it. He is kind of hard mouthed and can be chargy he respects this bit for some reason.

I joined bit auction on FB and never saw one with the mouth peice I needed. Then I got ahold of Kathy via FB and got it in about 2 weeks. After I got it, the kind I was looking for was all over bit auction! L&W makes them, so contact them or Kathy

I think its just a comfortable bit and that's why most horses seem to like it. It has a little more gag than your typical lifter (like an ed wright or cervi). The mouth piece slips on the d part instead of the shank which delays poll pressure. Where as a regular gag just keeps applying more poll pressure. I honestly could ride all 3 of my horses in this bit and they each have different mouths. My mare didn't like the first one I got, but it had a dog bone which she doesn't like. I ended up with a twisted wire and she loves it now. I don't feel like she gets hung up on it like she did with the locked mouthpiece CJ bit I was using before. I did have an issue on one of my other horses where the bit actually got pulled through his mouth. I ended up switching bits before I even noticed it in the pic. I still ride him in it at home.
