| Psalm 90:1-6. The oldest recorded psalm and was written by Moses when the children of Israel turned away from Canaan and headed back to the wilderness they had just left Numbers 13-14. Israel had come up to Kadesh-Barnea. They sent spies into Canaan and ten brought back a negative report. The land was as God promised , they saw giants, and were confident they could not conquer them. Two men. Joshua and Caleb, gave a different assessment. It was a land of flowing with milk and honey. And as for the giants. " Who cares if there are giants. God is on our side, and we cannot be defeated" was their response. However, the majority ruled, fear drove out faith, and the Israelites decided to not even attempt to conquer the Promised Land. As the result of their lack of faith, God decreed that everyone over the age of twenty, except Joshua and Caleb, would die in the wilderness. Moses begin this Pslam with the Hebrew name of god, Adonai, which speaks of God as master, in control over everything. What an awesome and wonderful God we have! Nothing can slip by Him, or take Him by surprise. We have a God who rules over all.
He rules over the wrong choices of life. Forty years after the children of Israel disobeyed God and missed out on His blessing, the next generation of Israelites walked into the Promised Land. This world will not stop the plan and purposes of God. God rules over the choices of others that impact our lives. Joshua and Caleb desires to demonstrate faith and obey God. Even though they spent forty years in the wilderness because of the disobedience of the first generation, they saw God's promised fulfilled in their lifetime. God even rules over death. The English Standard Version translated v 3 Yôu turn man to destruction. And say, Return , O Children of men. " You return man to dust ". Death is a reality for everyone, but for the Christ follower there is something beyond the grave. Even though we are going to return to the dust. We are also promised to return FROM the dust. Psalm 90 gives every Christ follower a perspective to remember: we have a sovereign God who is in total control. It only this world bust also our loves. Nothing gets by Him. For it is with God all things are possible. Father God, guide me today to do all things that will bring glory and honor to Yôu Amen |
