- Effective January 1, 2018, and with respect to the medication rules that govern show horses, furosemide (Lasix) will be removed from the list of conditionally permitted therapeutic medications and added to the list of forbidden drugs or substances in AQHA Rule VIO401.

Thoughts? Obviously this is going to leave a huge impact. I don't compete in AQHA, but is there a way "around" this? Can you give to your horse if an RX is given?

huh, wonder if this applies to the ones running on the track?  I don't understand why they would make it forbidden...

I've wondered what percentage of barrel horses are on lasix. Sure seems like a ton of them.

I don't show but it was prescribed to my mare as preventative care when she runs. She has never bled, but we all know most bleed internally and you never see it. She is a gritty hard running and turning and likes to kind of hold her breath, so it was highly recommended. I have been told " Most" of the top NFR horses run on it for same reason.

I wonder if they did it because there have been several studies showing an increased performance and racing speed in horses treated with Lasix regardless if they are bleeders or not. I'm not sure what alterenatives there are for extreme bleeders or if this question has been addressed with AQHA and their stance?

I think that is stupid. AQHA needs to get more severe for the a$$hats on the race tracks that are giving all sorts of illegal drugs-stop letting them just switch trainers so they can still run. Ban the whole dang lot of them!!!

Anyways, I have talked to several vets that think most all horses are bleeders, but the majority we just don't know about it.

I know quite a few people who use it.  Some are proven bleeders, some just use it like a preventative.
I don't understand why it's terribly bad, especially for those proven bleeders.  Unless AQHA is trying to get you to run a horse that doesn't bleed, but data shows quite a few bleed unknowingly.
They didn't exactly explain their reasoning.

Yep, I went t watch friends run at the AQHA show during the Houston rodeo. Lots of frustration, the officials did not seem to know the rules, disqualifying some and not others. One person protested their disqualification for starting their run too soon, they had video showing they did not. The committee responded that they would have to provide video of every run for them to even consider their protest. They got every run from the webcast and gave it to them, lol

The AQHA is a sinking ship. I have been involved in several aspects of the AQHA; halter, pleasure, cow events and speed events. The last several years has been a JOKE. It's like an over sized Peyton Place.

While I hate they banned legal use of lasix, has anyone thought of why they might have?  Like abuse of said substance?

The race industry would be pitching a YUGE fit if they took lasix off the board for them.

I can understand why they banned it.

For a few reasons

Lasix because of what it does can be considered a performance enhancing drug. Horses who need it would not perform well without it.

Animals activists arguement these horses should not be running due to their physical condition, we are forcing them to run and causing permanent damage.

Any drug used long term will have consequential side effects, this one will effect the kidneys.

Lasix can cause electrolyte imbalances and can cause cardiac arrhythmias that can cause death.

Lastly the biggest reason I believe is my vet said if a horse is on lasix, the trainer can get away with more performance enhancing drugs that are banned as the lasix will mask it.

Disclaimer, I honestly am not pro or anti lasix, never used it, so I don't have an opinion.

My thought us that it's not doing any horses any favors. What happens when performance horses become unusable and have no breeding value? They get canned. So you take a horse that could have an entire career left, if managed with this drug and now it can't be ran at all. It's on the fast track to Mexico now because it now has no value. Stupid.

AQHA has never wanted speed evets, the horses that they place can barely stand on their own tiny feet, much less run.  They like the tiny feet, straight hocks, hugh bodies out of proportion.  Remember they are they ones who thought the freak Impressive was perfect.

Did they give a reasoning behind it?

Race horses and other performance horses have ti run on lasix so all they are doing is upsetting part of an entire industry.
