My horse managed to cut her shoulder open at the trainer. Luckily not very deep but about 6 inches long. Trainer’s vet stitched it up and left about a one inch hole for drainage. The horse is now back home with me for TLC. I have never dealt with a wound, I’m more into “mystery lameness” and EPM myself.
She managed to pull a stitch already. I hydro the wound three times daily, then spray Vetrecyn and then cover it up with silver spray and fly spray. She is wearing a fly sheet but the cut is right at the border. Also she is on antibiotics. Anything else I can do to speed up the healing process and ensure this to be proper?

Where on the shoulder? Be careful with hydroing that you dont get water pooling in there. When my mare got kicked and split her shoulder open, I was told to not hydro it because of that. Her entire leg swelled so I would hydro from the top of leg down.

Sounds like you're on the right track...you may also try mixing apple cider vinegar and black pepper into a paste and rub on it after you've cleaned it...it'll keeps proud flesh down and limits scarring.

Sorry for the graphic pics but I dealt with this shoulder cut (slice) this winter. First two pics are when it happened (actual wound and then after stitched up). The 3rd picture was taken 2 1/2 months later. I used Underwoods and it was amazing how fast it really started to heal once I started using it.

Ouch!!! What did he do?
The tail end of one of the gate hangers stuck out about 1/2" and I can only assume she was trying to get away from one of the other horses picking on her and was thrown into it and then ran forward causing it to rip like it did. The cut itself was about 2" deep so she hit it with some force. She's never favored it or let it phase her one bit! It was sure ugly though.
