| My horse had a reaction to an IM shot. He swelled up a large area around the injection site and it feels pretty warm. It's painful enough he doesn't want to put his head down to eat hay. So I gave him IV banamine and hung his hay up in a bag. What can I do to help with the pain and swelling? |

| He may have an abscess at the injectionsight. I had this happen, vet mixed me a spray to put on the swelling and had me put hot compresses on it several times a day. |

| I made sure there was no blood. Gave 3 horses Excede and only 1 had a reaction. I've heard of it happening before when giving this drug, but I've never had a reaction to it or any other IM shot for that matter, so I don't know what would be a good way to help relieve the swelling.

I was thinking cold-hosing, glad I asked. What do you use for a hot compress? Also, how long after injecting would it abcess? I have an appointment for Friday and can take him along then, but if I should have it seen sooner I can do that, too. |

Location: Wild Wild West | I just googled Excede injection reactions and there is info on it. Seems it is not uncommon. Might want to google it. |

Thanks! I guess I needed to be more specific with my search, because I hadn't found that info yet! |

I think it was 4-5 days, I used a hot compress I bought at Walmart,, heated it in the microwave and used an ace bandage to hold it in place. It was difficult though to get it to stay so I hung hay bag of alfalfa to keep him still while I used the compress. |

Hope everything works out. I just gave a shot of Pentosan and did not check for blood before I injected and it bled when I pulled the needle out. I panicked just a bit, but all turned out ok. Hope yours turns out well, too. |

| Hot compresses. Put DMSO on the area. |

| Thanks everyone for the info. I put DMSO on it and found some hot compresses to use. It's crazy to think that in all the years that I've been giving IM shots I've never had a reaction like this. I feel terrible for him. Gave the shot on Sunday. He wouldn't eat his grain this morning and I couldn't figure out why. Then I saw the swelling, it was hidden behind his mane. So I held his feeder up for him and cleaned it right up. |

I think they gave me a 10cc dose. I didn't have any on hand. It worked quickly. Good luck! :) |

Abscesses should be drained, generally speaking. |

| Check with your vet but usually DEX and NSAIDS are highly discouraged. If you gave Banamine dex might not be an option for a while. |

| Put a call in to my vet, waiting to hear back from him. I've dealt with abcesses before, this does not appear to be an abcess. From what I've found searching online, this swelling is a common reaction to Excede. |

| Thank again for all of the advice and suggestions. Spoke with my vet and he said to give the dex this evening and to continue with the DMSO. Hopefully he'll have relief by morning. He was still pretty painful and swollen this evening. |

| There is still some swelling this morning, but he is feeling better. I still fed him up high so he didn't have to reach down, but I saw him cleaning up some grain he spilled on the ground, and I was glad to see that. |
