| OK y'all, I need some help, how do you and your horse get good and consistent with out running the pattern over and over at home. I know it burns them out but is there exercises you can do thats like working the pattern but not actually doing it? I know you have to practice something 100 times over before you get good and consistent at it but is running the pattern over and over the only way to do that?
Thanks

| Slow work and becoming a self aware rider. You do not have to run or even high lope the pattern at home to develop muscle memory for you and your horse - but you do need to be a self aware and focused rider. Ride with a plan - each and every time.
Ride to the same spot.
Cue the turn the same way.
Drive out of the turn to the next barrel the same way.
Consistent consistent consistent.
Our horses are creatures of habit - if we aren't being consistent with them they get confused. A lot of the time I really feel that inconsistency in the rider shows up as gate issues. A horse who's being ridden inconsistently isn't quite sure what spot he's going to run to, how the rider is going is to cue him, etc - he does know he's probably going to get whipped and spurred. A consistently ridden horse knows he's going to run to his spot and turn - he's confident. Confident horses work better and work harder.
If you aren't sure what your spots and cues should be, a good clinician can help you sort it out - I'm a Chris Martin fan myself because his method is very simple.
Another big no no in my pen is running home. I think running home is a great way to blow one up. Even when loping through, finish your 3rd barrel and drive off it a couple strides, then break them down to a trot or walk. |

| Being consistent is all in the rider. I think Lisa Lockhart is the most consistent rider of all. Watch videos of Lisa over and over again. Mainly watch her hands. Mary Burger is another one. Cassie Mowery is another one. Jana Brown has a bunch of youtubes. I did not ride for years and I have had a hard time riding my horses. I kept telling my trainer I need to each what I did with my hands and have worked very hard to concentrate on what I am doing. I made to nice clean runs at the Josey Reunion which is more than most did. My videos are on YouTube also. Not the fastest but very consistent. My trainer used to tell me don't let your horse cheat you and I kept telling her that I was the problem. It is a lot easier if you are young. So in a nutshell, work on you. Check Josey Reunion 2017 on YouTube. My horse is the paint. Kissyourmoneygoodbye is my horse with my trainer riding. She is a consistent rider also. Watch the slow motion what she does with her hands. This mare made three very consistent runs. The second run she was just cruising but still clocked.
Wanted to add. Watch the videos of me and kissyourmoneygoodbye. Note the turning styles are the same. My trainer trained both horses

Location: Where the pavement ends and the West begins Utah | I take mine trail riding. If I see a tree, boulder, post, Bush that I can safely walk a circle around ,I will stop back up ask to move off my leg continue on around and go merrily on my way. My horse doesn't know the difference. It's good for the both of us. |
