I've really been trying to stay more out of her way on turns and remember to lift more and make her finish second barrel.
She's in a snaffle too, I find it helps me stay out of her way a little more. |

Location: Saskatchewan | Yeah, that arena gets super deep after 100 runs... two double headers is a bit much for it I think because by the time the first two are over, there are just craters around the barrels and they can push them closed with the tractor all they want and it doesnt help much. And it also doesn't help when you keep getting drawn before the rake! I tried to put her just to the inside of the crater around second cause I had faith she wouldn't knock which helped her stay up but 3rd was just gonna be what it was.
I didn't push my mare at all, I wanted to worry about other things for the time being. Clocked at a 19.77 and 5th in the 2D. |

Im not anyone to critique... it's hard to tell how your approach is going to first. But it looks like your running straight for it and really having to work to get back around the barrel. One thing I was taught that has helped tremendously, is to head as if you're running to third, and turning towards first when you're straight with it. That way your horse isn't working as hard to get around it. Just my thoughts! ;) |

Location: Saskatchewan | Low 18's have been winning it. I believe it is a full standard, not 100% on that though because I ran this horse on a full standard a couple of years ago (had a year hiatus yay school) and clocked low 18's easily... so horses must really struggle with the ground or this pattern is just a monster.

Location: Saskatchewan | Bumping this back up with probably one of our best runs to date. Broke into the 18's and the 1D here, to be honest I blanked most of the run until I heard my mom yell at me to kick my horse and I remembered I had legs to get her around 2nd. It's not perfect but I think a few tricks in slow work and some more conditioning (my dad actually used her checking cows the week prior to this as I'm living and working 2hrs away and have no trailer) helped a ton.
I was only 4 or 5 tenths off of the winner, it was a tight race!

Ps: I did try to hold her straighter coming in instead of heading straight at the first barrel, I think I'm just giving her too much of a pocket there with how fast she gets around 1st.

The first barrel its more that shes not slowing down, shes going past it coming in. your pocket was good but she just didnt rate as soon as she needed to, if that makes sense. When you are slow working really look where your wanting to go. I rate right before where my tracks would cross leaving it. When I run, its just a little sooner than that. The only other thing I seen is you might could sit up just a little straighter coming into the 2nd and 3rd, your reaching your hand a little too far out and away from her, try to keep your hands closer to her neck. When you get close to the barrel, pick your had straight up instead of pulling it out towards the barrel. That will help bend her but keep her moving forward. Your doing good though! | I would suggest working on quieting your upper body down and use your core. First run, you hands are pretty loud and asking for a lot of things without really knowing exactly what you're looking for. Second run, you lean in pretty bad and tilt forward. You need to sit your butt down and engage your core. Will help quiet your hands too. |

Location: North Dakota | On the first run, you kinda "missed" your pocket going into the first barrel, so Squiggs had to "come back" to the barrel. On the second run, you got your pocket better.... but I wonder if you could still come in tighter yet. She still had one extra step to get around the backside that you probably could eliminate and make that first barrel even quicker.
On the first run, I can't exactly tell what you are doing with your inside hand as you come up to the second barrel. I just see your elbow jerking a whole bunch. So not sure what was going on there.
But same on both runs, you are LEANING especially bad on that second barrel. You lean a bit on the first barrel, but not as much as the second. That may be part of why Squiggy fades on that turn. All your weight is on your inside seat bone, and probably your inside stirrup and that is going to PUSH her away from the barrel. When instead you need her to snap around at that point in time and fire to the next barrel. You lean a little bit on the 3rd barrel, but it definately seems like the 2nd barrel is where you lean the most.

And I agree with the leaning thing, it's been a struggle.
She's still in a fatter English style 3 piece loose ring snaffle too, I don't notice that there is anything that I really need to change there is there? |

I think your bit is fine. She seems to be doing better on accepting contact as I don't see her throwing her nose at all like she was before. I'd try to fix your leaning first, before you start experimenting with bits.

| If you pull your left elbow closer to your body, it will help with the jerking and you wont lean as bad. When practicing at home, Lope left circle and see where your elbow is. If its off your body, suck it in and get muscle memory. Also your reins are too long, probably another reason for the jerking. I like your runs and mare is pretty. |
